q-link and AFTER button

Hi all,

I have issues with the after button in conjunction with the q-links. I assume that without hitting the after button the related q-link will not operate on recorded data in the track (and will only affect tghe curently played pad/pads) however i find it working even without pressing after most of the time (esp. in mode real-time/tune, the q-link takes on as soon as I enter Q-link mode...) Is this normal behaviour? have I missed something?

I'm using version 4.93 right now, but was like this with earlier OS versions too.

to be honest, the after buttons are a mystery to me too...
anyone care to enlighten us???

i assume you have this problems after installing the new pads?

I also got problems with the Q link 1 and after button ; when i use the slider the variable volume slides realy strange, it doesn't go from 1(top) to 100 (down) but when í'm for instance; sliding the slider from the middle to the top the variable range will go from 100 to 50, and not to 0 like it supposed to.. i guess something is broken..

i guess it's for both of us some kind of hardware error that maybe has something to do with the installation of the new pads, because before i installed the new pads i never had any trouble with the 1 st slider :S

no, I had exactly the same random behavious with the old pads (I've had issues installing the new pads on oneof my MPCs, but unrelated to the sliders).

I assume the mpc considers entry to the qlink screen as a slider movement?

Id like a slider reset option from the main screen, like using the "erase" button when playing a sequence. This seems logical to me because it only gets used during overdub or when the sequence is stopped.

i think that the 'after' button disables any recorded slider movements.

so...let's say that you've recorded a bunch of filter changes on a track using the q-link...if you're playing back the track and you muck with the slider, you're still going to get the recorded slider data affecting the sound...it'll probably jump around between whatever you're doing 'live' and what's recorded in the sequence. by hitting'after', the data recorded in the sequence is disabled, so all you'll be hearing are changes that you're making 'live'.

yes - this is the most accurate description in my view,i think its all related to the 'older' original slider ideas of only having note on variations, the later updates that involved 'real-time' & 'midi-cc' variation have led people off the basic idea of what the 'after' button existed for.....but true its a little offline now that a slider can be moved with 'after' off (not lit) and there be an 'apparent' change in the effect of playback.

u just have to get used to it really,
my main bother is that even when 'after' is on (led lit), if u start a sequence with note variation data in the tracks, the after button doesn't actually override these recorded events like it should, until the slider is moved.....always at the play/start stage....most annoying when i set the slider 'just so' in the most particular place with sequences looping and 'after' active (led on), then get set to record my new overdubs, and boom, its all lost as soon as i re-start the sequencer!

the only slight way round is to hold the slider exactly where u want it (between firm finger & thumb hold), start the seq recording/odub (always using a count in) then on the 16th before the downbeat, give the slider a tiny twitch to register its value at that desired value as the first bar tick approaches, this works well to avoid losing critical 'positions' of variation in the posi tioning of the slider on sequence starts.

You can also edit the slider data in grid edit mode. I find this to be the easiest way to get things to sound Precisely the way I want them to. It takes some getting used to, but once you learn Grid Edit, your life will be much easier. (You must have the JJOS to use it though)
