Is there some way to leave the note repeat function on, without holding down the note repeat button?
I like playing in note repeat mode, but like to play with two hands as well.

yes, press shift and note repeat. to cancel it just press note repeat.

if you hold down shift and hit note repeat it will lock it. then press note repeat again to unlock it.
