Haven't heard nor ever tried to but I will say that radio shack prob has the type II for cheap right now. I just picked up a 2g for 35 bucks so it's worth it.

Might wanna read this:

http://www.compactflash.org/faqs/faq.htm#What_is

There is no difference between the two types of cards besides the thickness of the outer casing. Any CF slot that will take a type II will accept a type I. I think most people on here use type I as type II isn't usually stocked at most retail outlets. The CF that Akai includes with all new units is type I.

Unfortunately one thing this forum seems to have proven is that if anybody at Akai will even speak to you, they tend to appear completely ignorant of their own products and the technology they use. So the response you got is sadly typical.
