Hey Guys... need help with slicing / chopping

Im kind of new to the MPC... I know how to sample sounds and how to zone them... ive been reading the maunal and shit, but when I watch these vids on youtube and these cats are sick as hell with te sample game... how do they get the pads to match up so perfectly? when i slice them into 16 sounds, they feel wierd... almost like the tempo is so off.

I know this is probably a thread that i will get hell for, but this is why i am posting in the "getting started" thread.

If anyone can please help me if you have any tips on how to really chop samples up... like how many bars should i record as a sample to chop up in 16 slices? timestretching, etc... i just want my slices to be chopped up perfectly so that i can make a completely different sound.

Simple steps is to

1 First learn bars to sample 1, 2, 4, 8 bars which are mostly used.

2. Next understanding the timing within bars according to the notes used such as 1/4 notes=4 quarter notes in a bar, 1/8 notes=8 eighth notes to a bar, 1/16 notes=16 sixteen notes to a bar and etc. When you slice you can slice according the timing you are after.

3. Next learn the material phrases aka grooves bassline, keys, vocals and rhythm versus drum loops and percussion loops.

4. Now that you recognized timing and material you are working with you can deal with tempo changing aka bpm. Drum loops are easy to change bpm as the notes duration are short and small so you can chop the notes into 16 notes finely. Phrase usually have a longer duration played in 1/8 notes and 1/4 notes to whole note too so not only will you need a bigger slice you may need to timestretch the notes 1/4 would be the smallest if you change the tempo of a ballad over 25% more than the original bpm.

5. You can chop for timeslicling the material like recycle or you can chop for composing a new kit or new sequence depending on what you want to do keep the one note per slice rule.

6.Once you got everything slice you can assign to a pad and use MIDI to line everything up in time. Remember MUSIC is notes played by PITCH, TIMBRE, Amplitude IN TIME and SCale probably sliced notes should groove together in Time. That is where your Step Edit comes in to make sure everything is in Time to each other.

thanks... i guess i have some studying to do... i hear hot stuff in my head... i bang out hot tracks on reason, but never really appreciated the art of sampling until i see producers killin it on the MPC. I want to be able to lace what i hear in my head when I hear certain ballads and old jazzy matierial with this 2kxl. I appreciate the reply. Any good books I should look into coppin' that may help a little?
