Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

my goal is to be able to make a BUNCH of samples...and set them up however i want on my keyboard.

is that a common practice with the mpc?
i mean...do i just hook up a midi keyboard controller to my mpc and i could assign the sounds like that?

what are some common methods of doing this (assigning sounds to wherever on my keyboard)?
i mean...i know i can do this with a midi keyboard and laptop...but,
how did this/does this get down WITHOUT a laptop...u guys feel me?

p.s.
and if i WERE to do this with a computer, what are some of the programs that are used to do this?
Kontakt? would whatever program that does this have to run in ANOTHER program like pro tools or cubase or something?

This is relatively tricky/slow to do with the MPC imho - For doing this kind of thing (similar to what alot of ppl do with ASR10 im guessing) I use the NN-XT in reason and MIDI up my MPC to control and sequence it like a sound module. You can map out all kinds of samples to different keys - pitch shift em like crazy - and it has alot more filter and lfo options than the simpler ones on the 2k(xl). You can also either load regular wavs, or load a whole rex file and it will map each slice chromatically across the keys (of course this can be interesting if youre using MPC pads instead of a keyboard to control playback and you have them in the "MPC" instead of normal chromatic note setup - its cool sometimes tho! yo find sample combos you might not otherwise use). Hope that helps.

For those of y'all saying it can't be done, I'm curious as to why you say this? There has to be some kind of way to do it...

I mean, I've been trying to do this shit for a while now and sometimes it comes out straight, then sometimes it comes out and none of the notes match the key of the beat I'm making and I usually do it with AutoChromatic.

So yea, sometimes it works, but thats with AutoChromatic. But see, the thing is, I hit up Kev Brown about a week ago with a email and asked him, and he said he uses the 16 Levels, for both basslines and sounds like guitars, strings and xylophones. (Oddisee be doing the same shit too.) Whenever I try to use the 16 levels there's only 1 or 2 notes that work and all the rest are out of key like shit. I've read that Hi Tek also uses the 16 levels for his basslines, but I'm curious as to how they both do this with basslines a lot. (Sampling one bass note then making a bassline through 16 Levels). Cuz normally when I 16 level it, like I said, them joints be all out of key, even when I tune the note first then hit the 16 levels. And I really don't think I'm tuning the note wrong so, I dunno, anyone?

you need to learn more about how keys work in music homie. The fact that you couldn't make two sampled sounds fit together has nothing to do with making a chromatic program and the fact you use a machine which has AutoChrom says alot. Kev Brown is laughing at you

Silly ass *****, calm yo bamma ass down, I aint even come at you like that so dont come at me like that.

And I solved the problem myself. I had been setting the tune of my sample in the parameters for the pad and not the actual sample, so thats why it would be on sometimes and off other times, because even when I thought I had the shit tuned right, it would still be at 0 cuz I didnt change it in the params of the sample.

Oh yea? Why do you say that?

i'm saying that because someone asked about it in very first message on this thread:
what would be the most ideal way to make more notes out of it?
like...say i wanna make an entire octave.

Without going into it TOO much........

Decent quality, the perception of the user is the answer to that.

Yes, autochrom on xl will give you 64 white and black key on a kybd.

I'm rollin with Fung on this.

when multisampling (let's say a piano or something), how do you know how long to record for? i mean...how long should each note be recorded for? cuz...if i just record like 3 seconds of a middle C on piano,

then throw that sample on my MPC...if i trigger it from a midi keyboard...won't it just play for those 3 seconds? what if i hold down the key for like TEN seconds or something. i'd want it to be sustaining until i let the key go, but won't the sample just end after 3 seconds no matter how long i hold it?

please let me know.
i have this killer patch i made on a rented keyboard that i wanna multisample.

thanx a bunch

thats one method

can the s950 do this?

there's a part at the VERY end of this song that i wanna sample (if anyone gets the chance...download Depeche Mode's "It Doesn't Matter 2"
from the album Black Celebration (1986)). it's all alone....just one hit at the very end.

off the top of my head...the sample sounds like the note's an E.

so...my question is:

what would be the most ideal way to make more notes out of it?
like...say i wanna make an entire octave.

what would be the best way to do so?

hey guys...i never really asked but i'd REALLY like to know:
what would this process be called (making one sample into more notes)???

i've learned what MULTISAMPLING is, but what would THIS be called?

Use Autochromatic, it's in the manual.

That will make 64 notes (a full pad/kybd pgm) outta that note your speaking of, some notes useful and natural sounding, others will not be so natural.

cool.

thanx brotha.

but...is there a specific term for what that?

i mean...if i wanted to multisample i'd say "i'm gonna do some multisampling".

if i wanted to make more notes outta one sample...i'd say "i'm gonna ...."

u know what i mean?
sorry if i'm being too literal.

i just wanna know what it's called for my own knowledge so i don't always refer to it as "making more notes outta my one sample".

lol

i would have...but i'm not sampling from a synth or anything like that.
it's just this ONE note that's at the VERY VERY end of "It Doesn't Matter Two" by Depeche Mode.

if u get the chance, download that track and see what i mean. it's at the VERY end.

i just wanna sample that and make more notes...at LEAST one octave's worth...but i just thought there'd be a specific term for that.

like a verb...so i don't always have to be like "i'm gonna take this samples and make more notes out of it."

u know?

The wind pipe, layered with the xylophone type sound layered with the choir type stab voice? You may be able to get away with a few notes sounding quite decent using auto chro - Have you tried it?

Jus depends what you want to replay and how. Forget ultra realistic. lol Failing that, beg a 4000 user to do it for you. A 2500 user will be able to get u quite a good scale too
