where do you guys get your bass sounds? sorry if this sounds mad beginner-ish, but i never really thought of it till now..in ur average hip-hop track, is the bass usually supplied from a drum sound or actual bass guitar? mind you, im not talkin bass lines..just some nice & thick bass..

1. Buy a hardware synthesizer (probably with a keyboard. If you are a beginer avoid the rackmount stuff.), and sample it. I use a Korg R3, a lot of people on this forum us a MicroKorg or Moog Lil Phatty, but any synth will work.

2. Create bass samples on a VST plugin on your computer, copy it to your MPC. Not as easy as using a real hardware synth, but there are lots of free VST synths so it is a lot cheaper.

3. Sample bass sounds from old records. If you sample whole loops, you might have to pay royalties if your record ever goes big, but if you take just a single bass note, and pitch it up or down on different pads to make a scale, you should be OK. This tutorial explains how to do it, you should definitly get it if you are a newbie:

4. Purchase a bass sound sample CD or download. (sample collections used to be very popular back in the 90s, not so much anymore... you can get a used synth for the price of many bass sample collections, so these things are kind of a rip-off).

5. Fart into a mic, and sample it. This is really how all the top producers do it. Make sure your studio is well ventilated. Many a would-be superstar has lost their life to severe methane poisoning trying to get that perfect bass sound.

the tight punchier bass is from a kick drum, the thick bass lines are bass guitars, or synth (im sure theres more ways), or from samples.

i use a bass guitar. well, i dont, my coworker is a bassist and i give em the beat and he hits it up lovely for me.
