I need to backup my hard drive to upgrade the OS but can't figure out where to dump all the data. Please help me out.

to be honest... you don't have to back up for the new os. all it does is write onto the card not rewrite the card

Yea I figured that out after the upgrade. I just wanted to be safe and not loose all my stuff.

If it was formatted with the Akai OS to begin with, then yes it does need a reformat. Unless yer the type that doesn't care about write errors causing data corruption due to the faulty Akai format routine.

I have a mac book & it won't recognize the MPC hard drive. It will recognize the CF card, but not the HD itself. any suggestions?

Power off the Mac, power off the MPC. Use a different USB port and power up the Mac then the MPC. Should go in.

Yeah, I restarted both systems & it works fine now. I should I worry about the jiggly USB port on the mpc? Thanks

Of course, you'll have to be careful when placing in the usb to the mpc. If your machine never leaves the spot then you can leave it in, that's what I do. but you could take it to an electronic repair shop (tv repair and such) and they might to help.
Is this a used unit? If not take it back...
