2000XL- $900 - good deal?

i'm renting a used 2000XL to check out the mpc world a bit. if i want to buy it it's $900(CDN which is basically the same to USD now). it does not have the eight output upgrade, but it does have smpte and a scsi connection in the back. i've been seeing on this forum that $600 looks more like the going rate for a quality 2000XL. or is $900 still fine? my guess is the store took it off the original owner for about $6-700 and then marked it up to 9.

my annoyance is that i still have to figure out a storage option and for this price a mpc1000 can be had which already has storage worked out on it.

Sounds like too much to me. But take a look at your options. Is the store offering you money back, or a warranty period. You could get a better deal through ebay but, you could get scammed.

Try talking the store down on price. Mention to them that going rate on ebay is much lower. Good luck.

thanks for the advice. that's why i rented it first to see if i liked it and to give me a chance to do some research. not sure about the warrenty but you're right it's a lot safer cause say if i bought it and took it home and it didn't work they'd give me my money back. with ebay the seller would say it worked before it was shipped so no responsibility

go to www.guitarcenter.com and check the used gear if you want an XL ... I would pay 650.00 tops for an MPC 2000xl stripped ( which it pretty much is as the SMPTE option is worth basically nothing these days and the SCSI comes on all models. . ) Check your craigslist or just get an MPC 1000 used for about 600.00 .. These are realistic prices ... The 1000 is a better machine hands down than the 2000xl stripped now a 2000xl Studio Plus model in my opinion would be a tad better than the 1000 but the 1000 has effcts standard and 6 outs which is plenty these days with DAW's.. The 1000 sounds a bit warmer .. The 2000xl has better pads but not enough realtime control over filters or effects . Also storage is a big deal with samplers and the 1000's setup and possibilities (internal hard drive ) far surpass the 2000xl in that department.. I have them both but use the 1000 almost exclusively now.

Guitar center offers warranties and ships things from other stores...

thanks mpz60- does the mpc1000 have better features for auto-chopping a sample across different pads? and are you talking about a mpc 1000 with upgraded pads and a jjOS?

Yes , you can auto chop with jjos.. A must have for only 30.00.... I have a Blue unit with the older pads and have not had any problems ( knock on wood.. ).. I saw an MPC 1000 used on GC for 599.99.. You could very well get a used blue unit and never experience any problems with the pads but worst case scenerio you can get new ones. The 1000 also allows you to have 24 Programs in use at once and with the 128 MB memory upgrade ( Use PC 133 256mb Laptop memory ( about 30.00 )) You will have 24 drum machines, synths, or breaks at your fingertips at any given moment not to mention you can layer 4 sounds on each pad for some great drums.. I love my 1000 and I think it sounds closer to my SP 1200 than anything else..
