hello there....

i'm about to purchase an mpc 2500.

does anybody know if it is possible to load a 'simple' program and sounds made in the 2500 into a 2000 (obviously ommiting any contemporary features).

also i noticed from looking at the manual that on the filter page the filter is set to '0'. i take it this means the filter still moves between arbitary values of 0-100, does anybody know how this relates to the frequency domain (ie, would a value of '10' = 10hz....) ?

loading a 2500 program into a 2000 wouldn't be backward compatibility. loading a 2000 program into a 2500 is backward compatibility. you have it backwards.

the 2500 can load most features of the 2000 program, though some things work a little differently and you'll have to do some tweaking.

the 2000 probably won't be able to load 2500 programs since it's OS was developed prior to the 1000's program file layout being created (the 2500 and 1000 use the same file layout). this is unless they updated the 2000's OS in order to load the new layout for the 1000, which i doubt.

the filter values on the 2500 aren't really arbitrary, they do relate to frequencies. the lower the number, the lower the frequency. i'm not sure on the exact numbers, but i can easily filter bass out of a sample, or filter the sample down to just bass.

the 2500 differs from the 2000 in that the 2000's filter was only a low-pass filter, and it wasn't a very sharp filter, it just kind of slowly muffled the sound. the 2500's is more sharp. plus, the 2500 can do low-pass, high-pass or band-pass.

Actually, it's more like a percentage value.

it's still just a number that corresponds to the cutoff frequency of the filter.

so let's say the frequency range of the filter is 20Hz to 20kHz. if you set the value to 100, it should set the cutoff frequency to 20kHz, regardless of whether you have it set on high-pass or low-pass.

but i can sorta see considering it a percentage value since 0 would be 0% up the frequency range (20Hz in the example above) and 100 would be 100% up the frequency range (20kHz in the example above).

True, but you don't know the frequency ranges of the filter. So you don't know which number corresponds to which freq. cutoff. And on top of that, it doesn't even have to be a linear relation either,,,

Bottom line, you can't tell someone a filter value of "10" means a cutoff at "xy" Hz.

if it's not a linear relation, then you can't consider it a percentage.

and actually, i believe you can say that a filter value of 10 pertains to a specific frequency cut-off. it's not like it changes depending on the sample you're filtering.

what leads you to believe that a filter value of 10 doesn't mean a cutoff of xyHz?

It does - but you don't know which frequency.
