Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Leod Beats Fri Feb 28, 2003 7:46 pm
I was wondering if anybody has any info or ETAs on the new OS.
I recently attemtped to upgrade to the new beta OS to attempt to fix my ZIP250 problem, but it ended up just giving me other error messages + I hadf to leave a disk in the MPC just to boot it up. So I decided to go back to OS 1.14.

Also, I found this out:

If you have a problem with your internal ZIP250; when you boot up with a disk in drive or you try to load off thew disk and you freeze up and get that error @ bff2:000, try going to the save menu to access your disk. It has worked fine for me so far, w/o freezing, then I simply switch over to the load screen and take care of business. Hope this helps for somebody, its a good fix until Akai updates the dang OS!

I wouldn't know about any plans to update the OS - my gut feeling says that 1.14 is the end of the line, as all efforts must be going into the MPC4000 and all the new VSTi samplers.

save the os into internal memory (2 meg rom) of the xl. the beta worked fine on mine and error free. b4 the beta it froze; life was impossible.
after os is loaded via disk; Load it into rom internal memory; I don't have the unit anymore; (have 4000 since yesterday) I had same prob until I followed os update to the letter from the manual.

Good luck

The actual version history of MPC2000XL operating systems below fyi:

1.03
1.05
1.06
1.07
1.10
1.11
1.12
1.14
1.14C ( for the ZIP 250 drive support )
1.20 ( for the MCD equipped units )

Consider anything lower than 1.14 to be of no use to a regular end user.

What's the OS on the Akai web site for the XL?
I downloaded both 1.14 and 1.20 for my XL.... 1.20 doesnt work with my internal zip drive though so I stick to 1.14 BUT I have a ZIP250 and it works...it doesnt say any where it's 1.14C, not even in my MPC it just says " OS:1.14 May. 15,2001"
Does any one have a link to this 1.14C?

Thanks

I'll stick it on my page for a day or so.

http://www.mansell-labs.com/downloads/MPC2KXL114c.zip

Should have a date of SEP 25 ... and the wrong year ... ! ( nice one AKAI )

Use at own risk, you're on your own with this one ... all the usual disclaimers.

Many thanks! I'll give this a try when I get some spare time.
This was an official OS right? I'm just wondering why it's not on their web site, or was it BETA?

Official as in:

a) was the OS installed standard in "most" MPC2000XL machine's that shipped with a ZIP drive installed at the factory.

b) was on AKAI's web site once upon a time in the past prior to Numark ownership.

c) was held on file by support departments of various AKAI distributors prior to Numark ownership.

So ... Official ? I guess so.

Hope it works for you... ( and others )

LOL I siad I wont ever do it again having tried 1.20 a few days ago and going mad trying to find my original floppy drive as after the new OS the MPC wouldn't pick up my internal iomega zip250....now I just tried 1.14C and it's the same! it wont recognise the zip drive. I'll have to stick the original OS back on via floppy tomorrow.
When I used to run 1.20 with the floppy it used to be a bit less buggy thats why I wanted a different os lol I guess i'll stick to what works though

Thanks any way :)

So ... question.

Did this MPC2000XL get supplied with a ZIP drive from the factory ?

Or is it one you placed in the machine ?

There are several types of bus interface from an internal mounting point of where ZIP drives are concerned.

Which one is in your machine ?

As in ATAPI or IDE ?

I got the MPC off ebay last year; It came fitted with a floppy drive and 1.20 loaded into it.
I then got a ide IOMEGA Zip 100 drive and loaded 1.14, this didn't work (yes I did check master/slave jumpers etc) so as a last attempt I got a iomega zip250 drive which worked perfect from the word go.
I'm 99% sure it's IDE but could be atapi not 100% sure on that one.

I'm going to stick the orig 1.14 os back on tonight when I get back from work.

Ok ... so it wasn't the PLUS model or whatever it could have been called in your territory.

Just a good old standard MPC2000XL with a floppy drive.

From memory the MPC2000XL need to see "ATAPI" compatible drives.

http://www.mpc2000xl.com/zip_install.htm

Some of the IDE models don't support the "ATAPI" compatible command set.

If it's an internal one then it's most likely "ATAPI" compatible.

Which ever works best...
