Hi

Installed a 120 GB HD. Can hear it start, but can't get a view of any HD. Is this possible due to this HD being to large?

Well I need to see any sign of it in order to format it. Tried OS 2.11, 3.06 and 4.9x. Can only see internal and memory card. The question is as such - when do you know if the HD is not compatible? Is it in my case? OR - can you get to the option FORMAT even if the HD is not compatible? This is my second MPC1k and the first had a HD installed, and I did format that one. This time around, I don't understand the problem.

Hint: Any field in the LOAD (or any other) screen that can be highlighted can be switched to another option. Try it.

Unless you already tried that of course. Is it on the list of computable drives? I know there are others of the same capacity on there.

I have tried the lot. The HD is not on any list I have seen. So,mMy question boils down to - when do you in fact know that this HD is not going to fit the MPC? I have done my "hit mode" and "hit load" and mess around, so then what????

SO - WHEN DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE YOUR PARTICULAR HD IS NEVER going to fit the MPC1k??

Is it like in my case where I never saw it (only heard it)?

Or should you typically "see" it anyway, and then get an error message when trying to format it?

I.e - there is no HDD when scrolling the wheel. Is that equal to the installed HD not being compatible at all?

Sorry man, doesn't look good for your HD. Only thing I can suggest now is taking it out and reseating the connections. Also check that there aren't any weird HD jumper settings in the wrong place (you'll have to check the documentation for the drive on that one).

Also, try the drive in a computer to see if it works at all.

Given up installing the 120 GB HD. Tried installing one of the compatible HD from Toshiba (yes it is listed), and same result - you hear the HD run, but no sign of it in 2.11 OS version. Also tried a CF card as a HD using a CD to IDE adapter - also powers up, but no sign.

Are there some known isuess with the MPC and faulty wirings?

I have had a MPC1k before installing a HD without any hassel.

By the way - the Thosiba HD is picked from a PC running XP, and is partioned in 5 drive letters. Maybe re-partioning this into one C drive and formating would help matters? Or is the MPC not concerned with such matters?

You can try that but since the other drives aren't working either I would suspect an internal connection problem.

Also, try the factory reset on the MPC (POWER ON + ERASE).

Ok. Thanks for the suggestions. I will do a few more things before giving this HD project up. A few weeks ago when starting my HD project I did find a loose connection (a wide data cable) which should go the HD connector inside the MPC, which might just one of several issues here. I guess I got it right since the HD/CF-IDE solution does power up.

All HDs power up just fine on my laptop loading XP.

Is there anywhere I could find schematics/pictures of the MPC1k by the way?

There's various pictures of the internals with some explanations in the sticky threads. Unfortunately neither service manuals nor schematics have been made generally available and the service centers claim Akai won't let them distribute the info.
