Hard Drive Disappears on 1000

i've got a 40GB hard drive in my 1000 i've had installed since February.
its worked fine with no problems ever since.
today, though, i was working on something and i went to load a sample from the hard drive, when i went to the load screen, everything looked fine, i went back two steps in the directory tree and the HD contents disappeared. the HD info said there was 0 memory available.
i rebooted the machine several times, sometimes it would only show the CF reader and the internal memory, other times it would show the hard drive as installed, but wouldn't display the contents and would say 0 memory was available.
i finally got the hard drive to show up after about 8 reboots. i was able to access it through usb and backup the entire contents to my pc. i'm no memory expert, but i'm assuming that if some part of the disk was corrupt or damaged i wouldn't have been able to copy everything?
since i did the backup, the mpc has only been recognizing the HD intermittently.
anybody have any ideas about this or similar problems?
i did some searching and saw some posts where people said their CF reader had connectors come loose from the main board. is it possible the something similar is happening here? i would expect that if a connector was loose i wouldn't be able to access the HD at all. does that sound right?
i'm assuming this is some kind of hardware problem, but i'm using JJOS 4.70 if anyone can think of a software issue that might be causing this.

If the connector wasn't connected, then no you wouldn't be able to access the drive at all. If it was loose, you might just end up with the problem you have now. Check 'em and see what's up.

Edit: unless of course you're under warranty, in that case just send her back.

there doesn't appear to be anything wrong connector wise.
i got no idea what the problem was. except maybe the drive is wearing out.
its salvage from a laptop. it works fine hooked to a pc in an external case.
its been working right all day today, so i'm hoping it keeps working. i'm just not storing anything important on it.

I have the same problem. I think it is the connector cable between the HD kit and the mainboard failing. I had the same thing with the flash card reader failing. I am waiting for a new flat cable for th HD to come from mpc.com. fingers crossed

if you have a 2.5 usb enclosure you can reattach the HD to a computer to see if its the drive - but it sounds like the drive is okay

Same damn problem except I bought my hard drive 80 G new about a month ago. It worked for like the first three weeks, then I had this problem. It bothers me a lot. I can't even load new sounds on to it from the computer because when I put it into USB mode the disc drive never shows up on the desktop. It does the same thing your describing as well. Someone please help! I bought this machine used on Ebay and this is the only problem I have had.
