what do you do 1st? .....sampls or drums

i started off finding the samples in the beginning, but now i'm used to making a drum pattern b4 any thing. .....unless i use acid or somthing

it variates.. some times drums first or sample first.. but i allways adjust the drums to the sample, and if one of the drumsounds doesn't fit to the sample i'll find another one..

I pretty much am sample based and try too make the entire melody first then hats then drums chops last. Seems too work ok for me still learning so I'm not molded to one specific method. If you have a certain sample in mind it may be easier for you to lay that down first mess with like 4 variations of that sound. then throw in some hats and kick/snares etc. make a few variations of each on different tracks then mute them out and see which ones sound best to you.

When I deceide to make a beat, I :



1. Listen through my records. When I hear something dope I wanna flip, I sample it into Adobe Audition to clean it up and EQ it right.

2. Load the sample into my 2000xl via Zip disk, then loop or chop into useable pieces.

3. Load up a generic drum .pgm and bang out a very simple 2 to 4 bar drumloop on an empty sequence.

4. Play my chops over the drumloop untill I come up with a sequence i'm feelin, then I do a couple variations.

5. Go back and delete the simple drumloop and re-do one that sounds good with the sequence I just created. I do the same for the variations.

6. Go to the song screen and arrange the different sequences/patterns into a song.

7. Load up a bass patch, find the right note that matches the sample, and make a bassline.

8. Mix down through my Mackie and MobilePre into Audition. Add some compression and EQ.


Bang. Done.



Moral of the story: I start and finish with drums...

i do the same thing deity does. i sample about 30 seconds of a song, chop it down on the first 10-15 keys of the asr. then i figure out which chops i like the best for the melody. then i create the melody, sample my drums into the asr, and create a drum pattern using the mpc. then i edit all the sounds to my liking. and use the mpc sequencer for everything else. basically, i like to make my melody first so it sounds good with drums and without drums.

varies for me too, if it's a long sample i usually put it down first, then construct a drum pattern around it, another question sort of similar to this, do u guys alwayz lay down the drums in the same pattern, ie hh, snares, then kick, just wondering

Do you mean the same "Track"? If so...No. I usually start off with hats on Track 1, then kicks and snares on Track 2 & 3.

its just association i cant help but think if i met you in ral life you'd actually eb a two-dimensional drawing of a fonz look alike....

I always come up wit a off da hook melody or find a tight sample then I make the drum pattern to go wit the melody or the sample!

I just cant get away from atleast laying a snare down for my melody that way I can get my tempo alot better unless its a sample, I still find myself always building my drums first regardless if I sample a melody as well, even if its just something temporary and simple, I also delete and change my drums around alot as well, it has to be perfect, sometime I spend more time on the drums than anything else, that shit gotta knock

Lot of time after I add in my melody or browse thru different melodies, I'm constantly evolving my drums around, sometimes I don't even keep the melody which leads to another drum change, guess its just a recycling process till you strike something

Usually I do drums first and a bassline then look for a sample/loop/notes to chop that fit it's mood, once in a while I construct my drums around a loop. Using the same method all the time starts to get redundant and your beat making process will probably become cookie-cutter. To answer the other question, I don't always start hats, snare, kicks. Usually I do kicks and snare, and add hats later, or I start out with just hats, add a kick then the snare last or hats, add a snare and add kicks last. Depends on my tempo, mood, and what I am working with.
