its cool make what ya want, there small barriers between the musical genres, hiphop is one of the most wide open genres, long as you got a nice drumline you can turn it into whatever you want, on Fab's album is some techno/house sounding ish

You can borrow from all genres to make you just that better

But as far as your choice of hiphop, there is alot better out there, most of your ish is kinda commercial, and pretty much simple, but don't think that is all that this music genre has to offer, theres alot more complexity and skill out there

i think alot of good music is getting lumped into being called techno. its not all techno. is a really abstract down-tempo hip hop beat techno? jazzy house that sounds live? if you say fu(k it and say its all shit than you lose out i guess....its energy in the music that make people take notice. if the track makes you feel like you're pounding nails w/ your forehead then keep looking..all i am trying to say is that there is such a huge variety of "dance" music out there there i believe that nearly everyone can find something to connect with....

I am not gonna go that far and say jungle is wack, I am NOT feeling it, but I know some hip hop deejays and turntablists that love it, I can't knock it cause it comes from the same soil that hip hop comes from, but its not for me. Props to the cats that like it though, do YOU.

I must admit it's not fair for me to say I'm not into Hip-Hop per se - I listen to all kinds of hip-hop albeit it's the most thugged out anti uplifting music but I like it - I really don't care who doesn't like it or who does like it - Something like my man incurablebeatlust said - it's the energy, period - I dj raves and clubs and produce techno tracks - When I'm bored I listen to Re-Animated by Linkin Park and I work at a place called DMX Music. We program the music you hear at the Gap, Nordstroms or Macy's (and we listen to this stuff all day...our day parting schedule covers the map from Country to Quebec POP) - so in one day I listen to everything from Christina Aguilera (who is HOT) to Carl Cox to Yin Yang Twins and back to Neil Young

So in that vain, you could say I'm lucky. I have the opportunity to hear all these beats and say hey, I could use that snare from a Limp Biskit track...or I'm going to jack that riff from that Lakeside beat - we are talking about MPC's right? those are samplers if I'm not mistaken -

But anywayz, you never know what's out there, until you go out there, otherwise your kind of stuck in your room and you get frustrated why your 2 bar loop aint going no where ~

I can kind of dig what your saying djadonis, I've made alot of down tempo and even some up tempo tracks that I was like whoah, where did that come from? That aint hip-hop or is it? Toe cutter hit it right on the nose, it all comes from the same soil where hip-hop comes from. So you shouldnt be suprised if you grow a hip-hop "beat" when your sowing in the hip-hop garden, ya dig? And I do think you can make music that your not necessarily into, just like some farmers out there grow cabbage but proabally cant stand to eat it. The only thing that threw me off was that you sampled Hip Hop, to make Hip Hop... this is a BIG nono in Hip Hop production. Some cats may be saying this isn't true, and indeed even some big Hip Hop artists have sampled each other, but it's generally frowned upon and seen as an unspoken rule of something you DON'T DO.

And yes, you should love what you do.

I have a friend that makes house/techno/trance/jazz/etc. I sometimes make music with him. Sometimes we make Hip Hop beats, sometimes we make other music that he prefers (house, techno). I never listen to house music, but i really enjoy making house music. I'm not great at it, but to come up with simple tracks is easy and fun.

It seems you had fun making Hip Hop beats with your friends. Do you have to become a Hip Hop producer now? No. Do you have to start listening to Hip Hop now? No. Is it ok you were having fun messing around with making Hip Hop beats? Absolutely.
