MIDI settings

can anyone help me with midi connections I have a motif es slaved to a mpc 2000xl..... how can I record melodies on the motif and listen to the drums on the mp at the same, the problem i'm having is when I'm recording on the motif, the mp must be stopped otherwise the motif will record all the midi notes i did on the mp to create my drum sequence as well the midi notes I create using the motif keys ......

1st... Mpc is the master, correct?

2nd... Midi out A to motif in, Midi in A to motif out, correct?

3rd... Midi track instead of drum track, correct?

4th... set Midi track on MPC to recieve on 'all channels' using 'open window' over midi track.

5th... set motif to recieve on separete channels for separate sounds, and designate midi track send channel on MP midi tracks (respectively), while matching instrument (recieve) channel on motif...

(per sound/instrument on motif... per midi track/channel on MP)

6th... make sure Motif and MP output go to a mixer or interface so you can hear both simultaneously.

dont hit rec on the motif just hit rec on the mpc and make sure the midi channel is set to the motif. then the mpc will rec the midi notes. you dont need to hit rec on the motif

Get a full understanding of midi. It's very simple my friend.

Thanks for all the support......the connection works, and MIDI is a nightmare.... can I slave Cubase SX3 to the MP aswell or should I slave the MP to Cubase SX3 ( I only record audio to Cubase SX3, never MIDI notes)
