You dont need million $ equipment to make a decent mix, but you surely will need to spend more cash on speakers (and room treatment, thats where the big money goes down the river) to exactly adjust reverb/stereo seperation or even compression than on headphones, BUT...
Headphones give you a different impression of the sound than speakers. The relation of the frequency is changed, dont know exactly but i remember doing alot of stuff on headphones at night times back then, in the next morning i listened on speakers and knew i just wasted my time. Thats for mixing esp. goes for sounddesign as well. Also the ears get tired a lot quicker than on speakers.
Headphones are cheaper though and if youre having trouble with parents/neighbours use them, of course. But i´ll tell you, lot of beatmakers i met just build ther stuff monitoring way too loud, sure it has to pund and stuff, but if your beat isnt working on lower volumes its crap anyways
