that's exactly what I thought when I first saw it. Mac OS X is a very nice front end GUI, and Microsoft's best at stealing, unfortunately they weren't smart enough to figure out to steal the Unix backend as well ... they'll never learn, but always make money...

I love the Fallacies in your logic Unix= Hippies, hippies = listen to grateful dead, MPC =- don't like Grateful dead, therefor MPC users don't like Unix

Though I do live in Portland OR, I don't listen to the Grateful dead (though my wife does and I've also DJ'd Techno at their last show in Portland. No better audience for Techno then a bunch of wacked out deadheads!)

So i'm at least 1 MPC'er that has no problem with the BSD kernel (it pays my bills), and I'm sure that every other MPC'er with MacOS X at least uses it...

I did some final testing:

Aksys runs ok. Some files and/or folders just wont move from the MPC to the Mac. Selecting "Save to Mac" rather than drag n drop, seem to be the best option. If your name is too long, youre **** because you cant get it to the Mac and you cant rename it in Aksys because it then becomes corrupted. For good.....
Creating/Editing/deleting programs and multis in Aksys works very good.
Aksys runs as a PPC app instead as an Intel application. I dont know which effect this has on either the MPC or the Mac... It seems none.
Regions are getting transferred into and from the MPC. Which is nice.


In short, it seems that everything works, except for the long naming thing and a some crashes when transferring files to the Mac. But I had those problems on my PC as well.. Aksys might just be really buggy software..?

Do you mean that if you add regions in, say, Peak, that they show up in the MPC's waveform editor? That really would be nice.

Yes. I havent tried it on a pc. Its actually very nice. You cannot do that with another MPC, afaik. If you have sampled a drumbreak for example, get it into Peak 5 and add markers. Convert markers into regions and save. Drop into the MPC through Aksys and hit SLICE. You can also edit the region to further detail in the MPC.
I was amazed when I saw "REGIONS" in Peak and when it actually worked! This is nice for remixing your own stuff too.
I think Wavelab knows REGIONS as well..
So if you now use Aksys to its full potential, you only have to sequence on the MPC. Some people might prefer that. I dont, though..

Wow, thanks for this tip. I'm still learning stuff about ak.sys. I've had trouble with it doing bulk transfers, but I've got to say that it's great for editing, manipulating the sampler, etc. I just tried the 'pad editor' feature recently, love that for putting together drum programs quickly.

I am a little worried though. Is it bad for a Intel Macintosh to run PPC apps and drivers? Because my system seems a little bit slower adn sloppier when Aksys is running. Does anyone know something about Mac/UNIX? Im working with an aluminium iMac intel core duo 2.4ghz with 24" screen and 4GB of speedy memory. It has the Rosetta CPU and Agere firewire chipset. I think its a rev 1. I have the one which is now listen at the Apple Store

macbook pro 2.4 ghz over here sync with my mpc4k & usb cable wit akaisys just fine , no issues at all
