inherited an MPC 1000.. what do I need to sync Ableton?

I have Ableton 7 Live on PC, but my sound card is the standard Sigma Tel. Do I need to upgrade just to sync?

I tried hooking it up using M-Audio's "Uno", but I couldn't get any sounds. I went through the MIDI tutorial for Ableton, too.

anybody running MPC + Ableton (no midi keyboard)?

I use ableton with my mpc. You'll need some kind of midi interface for your computer. I use an m-audio 2496 audio card, and it has midi in and out on it, but there are other usb and firewire devices.

Edit - I reread your post and I can't tell if you already have midi set up. If your already hooked up but just not getting a connection, check that the midi sync is enabled in the options menu of Live, and set your mpc to sync as slave - not sure what the pad is on the 1000, but it's in the manual. Anyway, this will have your mpc start when you start ableton. I don't know offhand how to make ableton the slave.

I use Live 7 and 2000XL. You need to have a MIDI connection between the MPC and the PC. If you want Live to be slaved from the MPC then the EXT button in the upper left will need to be checked.

Also, don't forgot to enable the MIDI preferences in Live and the MPC.

If you are going to be using a great piece of software and hardware like Live 7 and the MPC then I would definitely look into getting an external Audio/MIDI card.

I just want to be able to program beats on the MPC using sounds from Ableton. I thought all I needed was a MIDI to USB. maybe I need an audio cable to line in to the PC as well?

I followed the manual for syncing the MPC as a slave, but I think there is a misprint in the manual. It reads "In this example, as you have connected the external MIDI device to MIDI IN 2 (in step 1), select MIDI OUT 2. ? there is no option for MIDI OUT 2, only A or B, or AB.

Okay... What else is in your setup? Do you have a mixer? Are you only using the MPC as a controller for your Ableton Live sounds? Do you want to hear both the MPC and Ableton at the same time?

Your response sounds like you are only after playing Live with your MPC. You do NOT need an MPC for playing Live although it can't hurt if your MPC was given to you. You can make complete tracks in Live with just your keyboard and mouse... no MIDI interface required.

If you just want to set up the MPC as a controller then: Plug the MIDI In from your Uno to the MIDI Out A of MPC. Check in Live's preferences to make sure the Uno is listed in your MIDI prefs. Check in Live's browser in the upper right to see if the little light blinks to show MIDI activity.

You aren't syncing them so I would skip that until you have the ability to hear both Live and the MPC at the same time through a soundcard.

Yes, what outlier said. First get the connectivity between your mpc and live sorted out. I have a 2500, and use midi in 1 and midi out A. Then in the midi/sync page I select the sync tab and choose 'Sync In' as Slave. Then on Live go to Options/preferences and select 'Midi Sync', find the midi output and turn the sync on.

Then, if I want to use the pads to fire something on the other end of my midi connection (ableton, or a hardware synth), I change the main page of the mpc I'll change the track option to be midi, select the midi option as 1A (since this is how I have my midi setup on the back of my mpc).
