Wow!! Shure SM447 sounds AWFUL!!

My Shure cartridge was only a month old and the needle was severely bent, so I'm sending it back. I replaced it with the ADC QLM 34/MK III that I was using before I got the Shure, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Balanced lows and highs with a full midrange. This is not an audiophile stylus by any means ($40). I know the Shure is meant for scratching, but I can't believe the sound quality is this horrible. I'm going to get a second headshell and switch between the Shure for scratching and the ADC for listening/sampling.

Yeah but Shure SM447's are made for scratching they have good lows and less wear so they ain't the best for sampling. I use it and think it's fine but I know alot of fools switch needles for sampling.

I hear what you're saying. Since I'm sampling into the 60 or Emax, I'm definitely not going for a hi-fi sound anyway, but just for sitting back and listening, it made a big difference for me. Maybe you're ears are shit!!!

How am I a dick? I was just saying I know alot of guys like to switch needles like M447's for scratching and Ortofons for sampling. I was jsut statin some facts!

OK, sorry Whit. Thought you were using "fool" as in fool=dumbass. From which it would follow that I'm a dumbass for thinking about switching needles. But I was just messin with you anyway man. Really, no offense meant.
I'm serious about that battle once you get that Motif all set up...you'll prob kick my ass.

I got Ortofon Nightclub S needles. I love em but, someone recently said they rip up your records and recommended shure whitelabels over the ortofons..

the ortofons work fine for me but i dont scratch much and most my vinyl is thrift store ish so i spin the record back for sampling.

I read in an interview that 9th wonder uses ortofon needles....NO IM NOT SAYIN WE NEED TO USE THOSE NEEDLES BECAUSE HE USES EM!!!! im jus sayin bein a famous/professional producer I think he would use the top of the line needles for when he samples....soooo I dont think they tear up your records I dont know what kind of needles he uses when he is djing....

the only way i can see those tearin up your wax is that your not weighing your needle right.

i use an ortofon once in a while, not to sample but to scratch with ,they are heavy so you really need to weigh it out right.

personally i think the ortofon for sampling are very SH!TTY!!!

@ csmealer that needle was NEW? did it come bent like that or did you do it ?
i would have taken it back to the place you bought it.they could probably give you a replacement stylus.

i usually use Stanton track-masters...but in the last few days i been using my home turntable (1200 W/ a GRADO needle)this is just my listening station in my living room, sounds really great!!!

look at the needles it self , the thicker the needle the more color you will get , the thinner the needle the more you will hear to the actual recording.
I WOULDNT RECOMMEND IT IF YOU USE ALOT OF CHEAP SCRATCHY RECORDS .

try an AUDIO TECHNICA if you got the money there not to expensive there about $40,

if your looking to save your vinyl then don't use a DJ needle there to heavy on your wax.

Yeah, the cart was new. My table was set up for scratching by a professional who followed the instructions provided with the cartridge. It bent as soon as I started using it. Shure's warrantee said it's covered for a year except from normal needle wear--and they say to ship the needle straight to them. Hopefully they don't give me a hard time.

I don't see how that could happen. The needle would skip out of the grooves long before enough force could be applied to bend it. Do you have a pic or something of that?

Yeah bending a needle is impossible almost unless you bend it

Sorry, I don't own a digital camera, but it's not the actual needle that's bent. I dunno what happened, but after the first time I scratched w/ it, the metal shaft that the diamond is attached to was pretty bent. I tried to re-center it, but every time I scratched, it got worse. It's pretty jacked at this point. I've only had it a little longer than a month.
