externally triggering MPC500 (keyboard vs sequencer)

I'm confused on usage of the MPC500 as a sound module.

If I hook up a keyboard to my MPC500 it successfully triggers the pads assigned to the incoming midi notes. Here the MIDI cable is connected directly from the keyboard's midi-out to the MPC500's midi-in.

Now I connect the cable from my midi interface's midi-out (port A of an M-Audio 2x2) to the MPC500's midi-in.

I record the exact same keyboard input into Logic or Live, assigning the channel of the recorded track (and its constituent notes) to the same channel that the keyboard sent previously. And assign the port of the track to port A of the midi interface.

When I play back the sequence the MPC500 should therefore be receiving the very same(?) midi info it did when it was previously connected directly to the keyboard (just that it's coming from Logic through the midi interface, which in fact does show data blinking on the port A).

But now that the midi interface is sending the note data (which appears in Logic to have appropriate values) there's no sound from the MPC500.

The same situation holds for setting note-ranges for tracks of type midi on the MPC500 via midi keyboard - works with a direct midi cable connection, but not when routed by Logic through the midi interface.

I looked in the newbie faq but the discussion there didn't seem to address this particular dichotomy of results. I did check out my midi interface with other devices - it seems fine on both ports, as do the midi cables etc. Tried this with both Logic and Live with the same settings.

Am I missing something obvious (wouldn't be the first time) - or is my midi interface or software sequencer doing some conversion or filtering on the note data before it gets to the MPC500.

if youre rcording midi into logic via a keyboard then you would have to midi sync the mpc to logic an set logic as master and the mpc as slave(use midi clock).....that way when u press play in logic the midi signals u recored into it will be sent to he mpc which would then trigger your sounds stored in the mp....you also might of forgot to set the track on the mpc to "midi" and specify which midi channel youre usb midi interface is sending the data......hope i explained it right

Yes I tried setting the mpc500 as slave but still the same (no sound).
In any case I'm guessing that piping keyboard input through the
sequencer and midi interface for purposes of setting note ranges
for instance, wouldn't depend on syncing(?)

I'm starting to suspect the midi interface (I did drop it recently...)

it might be that your dropped it......why are you recording midi onto your computer just to send it to the mpc?....you should just record midi straight to the mpc.....

..because I'm using the triggered MPC sounds in a side chain to the pvoc instrument in Logic, and it's simpler to have the sample triggering and synth triggering in one score. Though I might end up taking your suggestion and recording the triggering on the MPC and then slave it to Logic. (That would essentially achieve the same result)

But you're probably right - probably need a new midi interface...

you could try this...it might work...midi out of keyboard to midi in on mpc and midi out of mpc to midi in on the computer midi interface....and set midi trhu on the mpc....this way you could play your keyboard and trigger vsti instruments in logic and sequence on the mpc....you wont be recording any sort of midi in logic but you would be using it as a vsti host(sound module) along with the drums and samples u have on your mpc.....all sequencing and midi recording will be done in the mpc......and then when u want to multitrack your beat to logic unplug the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in on the mpc....and plug a midi cable that goes from your pc midi interface out to the midi in on the mpc....and sync via midi clock...solo each track and record individually

Thanks - that's a great idea - I actually found an alternative:
sending midi from logic to the keyboard (an emu controller)
and setting midi-thru from there. That successfully triggers
the MPC500 (for whatever reason) and lets me consolidate all
score info in Logic.

Simply an inversion of your scheme - and probably would
never have occurred to me if I hadn't been pondering your
suggestion!
