Making the song

This is my first time composing a song on the MPC 1000. I've spent the last four years doing all my sequencing on a Yamaha RM1x. So now I have a single sequence with all of the parts to my song. Normally on the RM1x, I'd copy this sequence across all the sections (sequences) and delete the appropriate part for each section, chain these together and convert to song. Is this the same kind of approach I should take on the MPC 1000? How do you all take your tracks and make it into a cohesive song? I wish I could record to MIDI all the track mute changes in real-time. That would really make it simple.

track mute sadly is not a MPC option. It is probably faster to sequence each part out on a seperate track in your sequence rather than copying and pasting each part and deleting the parts you dont need on each track. You can use up to 16 tracks in each sequence so you may as well use them as you go along creating the beat. Just build your sequences and then arrange them in song mode.

Hi Chisel, I went from an asq10 (the stand-alone Akai sequencer) to an rm1x and back to Akai technology with the mpc1000 recently.

The way to work is actually quite similar, I often thought Yamaha nicked the song/pattern workflow from the asq. Remember the chain song->song approach on the rm1x? Just build your patterns on the mpc, creating loops with a lot of activity, and make lots of copies with variation. Then convert them to a song, after which you can add flow and transitions in a linear fashion. You can now go back to a pattern again and so on ad infinitum.. do you see how you can look at the sequences (1, 2, ..) as similar to the parts on the rm1x? (A, B, ...)

Thanks for the replies. Here's what I did... I started with one sequence with a dozen tracks that make up the entire song. I turned off the loop feature and copied the sequence for each of the sections of the song. Then I went to each individual copy and deleted the tracks I didn't need for that section. Finally, I went into song mode and arranged the sequences to make the song. I must say that song mode on the mpc is a delight to use compared to the pattern chain mode on the RM1x. I like that you can than convert this song to a single sequence. I have to look in the manual to see if there is a way to copy tracks across sequences. This would be easier than copying the entire sequence and deleting tracks.
