Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

So it seems nowadays cheaper card readers when compared to VST or Forat prices are getting hard to find.

I read here occasionaly of people having trouble with zip/floppy disks/drives.

Now I was wondering how many of you with card readers have had any trouble with them...I'm not talking about having bought an incompatible card reader or stuff like your card reader not reading SD cards. I'm talking about a good working card / card reader that gave you problems.

I've had my card reader now for over a year and a half and never had any trouble. How long have you got yours and have you had any problems with it?

By yo word i agree Wed Jan 30, 2008 5:58 pm
I only installed mine yesterday so it is too early to judge for myself.
Apart from user error or the need to udate the os I dont recall ever speaking to anyone that had a reader that died on them. A few ordered some that did not work due to the fact they were faulty on arrival (by this I mean faulty and not that they were the wrong type), but again they never seemed to work in the first place.

I wish I done this ages ago now because the price of a reader now is crazy. I did buy one from vst because I wanted one fast an did not want to worry about whether it would work or even if it would get sent at all!
I guess with companies like vst or mpcstuff you have to look at it like your paying extra for them to source you one instantly or like me you will feel like crying paying 150us for something that used to be only 20 british pounds (im in the uk so currency conversion was pretty good).

I just got an external bought from a member here on MPC Forums, for my MPC2000 CLASSIC. and having a few minor issues, but its probably just user error. Will post a review when i fully check it out.

Microtech pcd 47 b

i've tried, tested and installed about 10 different types into different machines. the IDE ones are a lil bit slower on load time with an 8mb kit. so there no major difference there. i'd recommened SCSI, although its a b1tch to get the cable in as opposed to the IDE versions.

I got the MPL external dual CF reader from 950skweezyotitties, and It seems I can only get the MPC 2kClassic to recognize the card reader when it is connected to the MPC via external zip drive on ID 5 and Reader terminated on ID 3 ( or 0-5 etc.). When I try to hook it directly to the MPC, the MPC cant see it, error lights ya know wont work. Otherwise, its working well so far. :?

sounds like he has it daisy chained..

did you try to terminate the unused card reader port when you connected it directly to the mpc.?

Occasionally my card reader will say disc error when trying to load up off a cf disc. After maybe about 4 tries it will work eventually

Hey thanks bra' man. Yeah, i tried terminating it. It has 2 sliders similar to the new zip drives. As i understand it you move these to terminate and to turn parity on or off. So, ive been messing around with it. First I set it up just like "950" said but i kept getting "wait" message from MPC and error lights on the external SCSI reader when connect directly to the MPC2K. I tried later to dasiy chain it just as you described and to muy suprise it worked!! I didnt think it would but it did. So I immediately unhooked the zip and hooked up the card reader to the MPC2k and once again error lights and wait message.
950 says fuse blown maybe in reader that dosent make sense though? It wouldnt work with the zip if at end of chain then. Right?
Anyway I got a terminator plug and I am going to see how that works out. Im guessing I could just hook the reader to the 2K and and plug the unused scsi on the reader and get it to work.

This how it looks on the back notice the 2 sliders there. Not much to deal with i suppose. Yo thanks yall for helping out.

That SCSI ID showing in the pic isn't the one you have the reader set to is it? If so, it looks like you have it set to 6, and that would definitely be a problem because the ID of the MPC is 6 and unchangeable. Make sure you don't have a SCSI ID conflict.

No, that isnt a picture of my settings. Currently my settings are on ID 3 for the card reader. When I connect it directly to the MPC2k they are set to ID 3 too. Termination is suppose to be 1 slider up for termination on and 2 for Parity and is on the down position. I guess I will have to play with it till something gives.

Soooo for right now, MY MPL external card reader works but not without the zip drive daisychained to it.
