Need help re-learning how to use mpc

I have been using sequencers and samplers for several years, but I've recently bought an MPC 1k from watching them being used on the net. The thing is, I seem to be falling into old habbits and I need to understand how other people are using their machines. I am of the school of sequencing everything on keys, then having everything done, just to press play... What I see on the net, are people playing thier sequences more like instruments. I basically want to know what it is they are doing, and I can figure out how with a few pointers. What I see is people using the pads to turn on different samples. Are these different sequencer tracks or are each sample linked to the internal clock to keep on time? Or is a combination of both? Also, some pads seem to be set on what use to be a HOLD button on old drum machines where you hold down a hihat or other sample and it plays over every 16th note... PLEASE don't tell me to read the manual as I don't quite know what I am looking for. Damu the Fudgemunk is a good example of what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance...

i doubt anyone will respond to your question. i suggest your just start learning your way around the machine ,and once you begin to understand the basics then you'll be able to ask questions that make more sense,and get some answers

I knew that this may strike a chord... But I'm just asking for WHAT is done so that I can figure out HOW it is done. I'm just trying to expand the way I work and enjoy the benefits that a keyboard workstation does not offer. If anyone really has a problem with this, please look at another post that catches your interest.

What they do is that go to Track mute. They have several tracks each set to a different sound and everything and you press the pad for each track and it mutes and unmutes that way you can play a beat have it loop and unmute different sounds at different times and patterns. I think thats what your talking about hope that helps

Oh and the hold thing is the tap tempo button if you hold it down its going to display 1/8 1/16 1/32 (and then one for each but in triplets) on the "f" buttons you press which one you want and then the pad and it plays it.
