All the fellas with standalone multi-trackers...

Hey,

I would like to know, who of you guys uses a stand-alone multitrack recorder, what model and how is it integrated in your workflow?

I don't have one yet, but I think about gettin an AW 2400 later, as so much don't like computers for makin music!

Any experience around here???

What is it about DAW's or computers that make you feel that way? I started out with a Tascam 688 Midistudio (analog 8 trk) then moved up to using a 24x8 mixer coupled with an Alesis Adat xt20 machine back at the turn of the century. But now, I can't ever see myself going backwards to the old ways of doings things when achieving results is ten-fold faster/better now by working on a DAW. But this is only MY opinion...

I have an VS-2480, and the biggest problem I've had with DAW's is that the hardware is very primitive. I have a 4x cd burner (slow) and certain things like timestretching is just as slow as the 2kxl. Effects are limited, and when you need more, it costs more money. I have the option of a screen (which I use) but if you get something like Reaper (free) that will work faster than any DAW because your computers processor is more than likely faster than anything in hardware. I've used Audacity, and it is so much faster and easier to use. When I perform any function, it works fast. Normalizing, applying effects, etc, is all done quickly, and you also have the option to use VST's. You can do the same with Reaper. I just downloaded it yesterday. My 2480 will be on ebay within a week.

You know it's just my personal thing - so I don't judge ayone using DAWs - but everytime I spent some time on a DAW I started to create a pattern and after that - yes, it was so convenient - I copied andpasted what I had done with small alterations. The results where boring and I had to force myself t work on it to make it more interesting. In he end, the process wasn't fun at all. I'm just not the thorough kind of editing guy. I need an instrument. Tracks I made on my Korg ESX-1 where muh more fun to do cause I only had to push buttons and tweek knobs.

The other thing I see is the setup stuff, you know. COnfiguring your I/O box latency settings etc. I want a plug'n'play solution And I think I wouldn't even use 5% of a DAWs features. I more or lass need a reel-to-reel kinda work-style.

But as I said, that's my idea of makin music. Respect to those who keep their moivation in in-depth learning of a DAW

Back to the topic.....anyone else with muli-track experience???

I am using an AKAI DPS 16, simple enough to use, no latency issues, no driver issues, nice sounding mic pres. etc.etc. Just plug in your gear and your ready to go.

I use the Roland VS 2000cd. I tried using other multi-track recorders in the past, all Roland, but they didn't have the flexibility I was looking for. With the 2000cd I can record into the machine and then transfer the files with a wave converter into my computer. I usually do all of my mixing on the machine and then bounce it all down to 2 tracks and then transfer the wav files for my amatuerish mastering. I use the machine away from homes sometimes, that's why I went ahead and bought it.

I work this way the majority of the time. I user REaper from time to time, it's a good program.

ADAT HD24....I use it for any and all recording that doesn't require a ton of edits.....It works just like an old reel to reel....punch in, punch out.....simple and stable....I send the HD tracks to a pair of 02r's along with MPC outs and 9 sound modules / keyboards....From the 02r's to Sound Forge for a final mix..I have everything sync'd via MTC, so If I have to go deep I can port tracks to a PC for editing (and then back) but it's rare I need to do that......

I dont understand, isnt a daw and a hardware recorder the same godamn thing? The daw just has a different user interface. Both record on hardrives,both are digital,both can have controil surfaces. What the hell is the difference?

I use a Korg D888 eight track digital recorder--shit is absolutely dope---I would much rather use this than a DAW for recording

I have a tascam dp fx I had pro tools and its cool but I hate losing my stuff all the time I like my old school set up.

In the case of the HD, the differences are minimal.....I like it because it uses hot-swappable drives. I'll use two per project; one of them backup.....new artist, new hard drive. It's also dedicated to one thing and does it well, with transport controls rather than a mouse and keyboard. It also allows me to use my PC for other things......

Basically it's the same! If you take a PC and a dedicated game console for instance and compare both you probably get the idea. PC does a lot. The other gear is DEDICATED to only one task!

I would like to, but I don't wanna spend the extra bit on maintenance. And I would need some kind of inline-console or do endelss patching. So I'm gonna get that AW 2400 which is a digital mixer, too!

But I'm honestly considering gettin a two-track reel-to-reel for mixdown...
