Strange USB errors... Please help.

The Type I/II/III question is about the physical size - nothing more. The little hard drives are usually Type III because they're bigger, but that's it.

Last time I bought a CF card it was preformatted, I could save files to it straight away when I plugged it in to an iPaq. The partition type is locked in place (try to create 2 partitions on there, see how far you get!) Its onboard chip is filtering incoming requests, remapping bad blocks, it's hard to see what's going on inside there, but it still helps if you can use standard disk checking tools every so ofte.
SanDisk actually had a very good rep. in the digital camera world, they've been one of the big names for years alongside Lexar. Don't have any myself, tho, just some no-name brands that I'm actually quite happy with (but I need more).

I have CF cards with multiple partitions. Newer versions of Winblows do not allow you partition CF cards, not the cards themselves. You can also have Linux formats, Mac formats and even Akai formats so there is nothing `locked` about the partition type.

So Windoze is getting in the way? Typical. At least CHKDSK still works like it should, still the most useful disk tool after 20+ years.
