++++ DRUM MACHINES/SAMPLING DISSERTATION +++

What's going on people.

I'm in my final year at university, studying music production. I am currently doing a dissertation on drum machines and sampling within hip hop.

I hope to discuss many issues like the development of drum machines, how sampling has evoloved over the years [i.e. different producer's styles], the argument of sampling other people's work, the comparison of drum machine production to computer software production, and so on...

I was just wondering if any of you would like to give your thoughts on this project, be it your own opinions on any issues or just general discussion which may aid me in compiling a worthwhile piece on a subject that we are all interested in.

Also, if you could point me in the direction of any articles/websites, that you've read in the past which you think may be beneficial to my work, i would be very greatful.

There is this Paper by a University writer and he interviews a couple beatmaker/record collectors and topics range from finding samples, flipping samples, diggin, sampling ethics and the beatmakers themselves. Its a great read.

It was written before the cpu beatmaking era took off.

tons of sampling articles, u could probably read all day

Might take you too far but I'd also look into the older ones vs the newer ones, specifically why some of the old machines are still used today by many great producers/beatmakers...

The guy who wrote this paper based it on 10 years of research supposedly.

maybe talk about how different machines (tr-808, 909, older samplers) had certain characteristics or limitations and how these traits influenced the sound of hip-hop during certain periods and in turn crafted a sound that became desirable.
