I have done some diagrams to explain a feature i would love and find helpfull , please give some feedback

Basically when cutting a sample for example if this was the break

Image

Then you would press SLICE , then enter that it was a 1 bar sample it would then as shown above send all of the segments to a program automatically placing slice 1 as pad A1 slice 2 as pad A2 and so on . The it would automatically as shown below place you segments into a pattern at the timing they where in the original sample .

Image

So if you pattern played at the same tempo as original break you would here a perfect loop of the break . You could also go into the program and swap samples for example a drum machine . You would have the same groove as the original break but with a drum machines .

Does this make sense? What do you think?[/img]

not so bad idea for lazy guys.

There's no fun in that. Are people so jaded that they can't be bothered with placing their own samples... Automatic this and automatic that.....

How about adding a "make me a beat" button and just watch the muhfuka GO GO GO and hook up a whole song.... while you sit back and chilllll... the easiest beat you ever made.... err watched being made....

I'm done with my rant now  .

Well it would be great for me , why lazy ? Could come up with some good stuff like this and get grooves of breaks that are different to the grooves you get from playing on the pads .

Maybe im the only one that would find this usefull then .

Thats a basic function when chopping on a pc (recycle, fl, live, i think even cubase gives you a midi file of your chops).

But i dont think it makes much sense on a mpc cos the midi editing features are kinda limited. In live i let it chop the loop and then rearrange parts by moving blocks of midi notes around, very complicated to do in grid edit.

Use a pc, imort the midi file if you want that so bad.

For the "lazy" part:
Try reprogramming a busy drumloop on 176 bpm, then tell me i´m lazy if use such stuff.

Well its just an extension form patched phrase or using loops , just means you can edit each sound easier .

Why would you want to split a break and reprogram it when the mpc or recycle can do it in a sec just seems like wasting time. Seemed like a goo didea to me , ha ha .

So i can edit the single sounds, swap them, whatever. Total control.

i've gone back and forth on this

used to want it badly, for above reasons, as well as saving tracks of midi pattern presets, etc

but a chopped sample pgm + tc off is the same thing if your game is right

still though since it's a standard feature in stuff like recycle, etc, a "slice with midi file" addition to SLICE would be nice.

not at the top of my list, but in it

what this pretty much is, is if i remember correctly from my fruity loops days is if you use the slicer it lays them out in sequence in piano roll. this would definitely have its uses. but i think it would be nicer, to be able to choose a function like randomize. of this layout. so it picks a random order. that would be nice. cause even if you pick a so called "random" layout in grid edit. it isn
t going to be completely random. cause you are placing them.

"For the "lazy" part:

if you assign the samples to the right pads, you still don't have to reprogram anything. What if you had samples on certain pads by mistake (example: just sampling sounds with no intention of making a beat), then you finally get the urge to create. If the MPC automatically assigned chops, it would ruin a beat if the chops were placed where samples were already assigned.

Given the new pattern mode that we're eagerley awaiting, slice sample to pad pattern would make a lot of sense to me. You'd be able to trigger a loop like a patch phrase but use the shift timing, tuning velocity etc etc to make adjustments and record the pattern into a to sequence.

mikolo, I like what your thinking. It would be fun to see how you could apply this to the new arpegiater... I would like this very much. Is this what a REX file is? This would really be an advance in hardware.

JJ can you have the MPC sample the best parts of the record, then slice it, then place it on pads, then find the right tempo, then place the samples down, then bounce the beat, then burn it to a CD. And if theres room for coding can you make the mpc shop my demo

Cmon now how much easier does it have to be?

(sorry djdsk not tryn to sh!t on your idea im just sayin tho..)

I think a rex file is a series of sample slices coupled with midi note info .
At the moment the pad pattern isn't quite like this..but i imagine it could be even more flexible than a rex file.
I don't no how difficult it would be to translate the timing differences of the sample slices to the note values in a pad pattern, but slicing can already drop the sounds automatically to pads and the new pad pattern can play a pattern from a variety of pads. This way would be very flexible from the users point of view, cause you could trigger the whole loop (or any variations you make) from one pad and play the individual slices as you please. Rex slices can be played as individual slices, or dropped into tracks as entire loops but what you can't do (as far as im aware) is trigger them in realtime like you can with the MPC patchphrase thing.
From what nym says pad patterns can be easily recorded into the sequencer, so that side of thing would be covered if slices could be mapped to pad pattern. Its just a thought really , but id definetly make use of it>im already thinking how cool it would be to trigger a little drum fill from a pad and tweak the subtleties within the fill!
