Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By DJ Six Tue Feb 19, 2008 8:45 am
I just recently started having problems when trying to load a program via zip disk. I can manually load each sound on the disc to a pad without issue, but if I try to load any program file I get an error for each and every sound to the tune of it "Can't Find File!!"

Different zip disks, different zip drives, programs from actual libraries as well as programs I've made using MPC Editor (which have always worked before without issue.)

I'm on a 2000 classic.

Any ideas?

Maybe your disk is corrupt.

Maybe the PGM APS file is corrupt.

Maybe the files have been renamed and the PGM APS file cannot find the proper filename.

Well, I figured at first itwas just the disk, which is why I tried about 6 different disks as I'd mentioned.

As far as the proper filenames, no issue there. Again, I can manually load each sound off a disk without issue, it' just a problem when it comes to loading a program.

As far as PGM/APS files being corrupt, I just don't know what could possibly cause such a thing, unless it's the MPC doing it itself when attempting to load the programs.

No clue. Just tried creating a program from scratch using MPC Editor right now and it still doesn't work. Never had an issue with this before.

Have you tried loading programs from you floppy drive? If that works, maybe its a scsi fault, also try loading a new OS disk, the OS could be corrupt.

Last night I purchased a few new sound libraries that came in the form of pgm and wav files. In other words, the same thing I've been using on the MPC.

I threw them on a zip, put it in the MPC and the same problem - despite having the sounds there, on the disk, capable of being assigned to pads manually, it still says these sounds can't be located when trying to load up a pgm.

So, I put the disk back in the PC, loaded up MPC Editor, and went in to edit the program. This time, however, I actually exported the pgm and sound files to a folder on my desktop, just to see I guess. I noticed the format of the sounds was no longer wav (can't recall what it was, but it wasn't snd) so again I reformatted the zip disk, and then threw this new set of sounds and pgm files on the disk.......and it worked.

??? Does the classic have some kind of issue with using standard wav files with pgm files that it doesn't have using snd or other formats? How could I have never had an issue before this?

Yea, don't know myself, but hey I found a work-around so I can deal....

Yea I dunno, but I can say this library was purchased as a 2000/XL library... so I would say doubtful.

No clue.

I think that programs for the MPC2K look for samples with the .SND exstension so if the samples are WAVs then the program won't reconise the samples. This isn't to say that the MPC2K won't read WAVs it just that its looking for samples with the .SND exstension.
When I make up programs on my 2K I sometimes Import samples in WAV format but when I save the complete program the 2k saves them in SND format.
So I don't think its a problem its just the way the programs are set up, maybe the newer machines don't mind wavs in there programs.

I'm inclined to agree. And again, I can't remember what format the audio files were in after using MPC Editor to basically resave the program and files, but I know it didn't say they were .snd on the PC (though that doesn't mean they aren't actually .snd files) but either way, it works. Just kinda sucks that I have to resave any programs I want to use on my classic through MPC Editor.

Thank god for that program.

Just to put some closure on this one, in the end the problem was indeed me and my method.

Basically, whenever I use my classic (which is rare) I've typically picked sounds from my insane library individually and created a program with them using MPC Editor. This works because when you export the program you created, it asks which version. Obviously, I'd always chose MPC2000 for that, and everything worked fine.

The reason being is that when you export the program AND the sounds, it is simply copying the sounds you chose to the new location you chose IN SND FORMAT. So, while all my sound libraries were on an internal HD and most of wav format, when I exported the program AND sounds to the Zip, it was copying them AND CONVERTING THEM TO SND FORMAT. Therein lies the issue I was having.

As I'd mentioned, I purchased some new libraries, and while they were sitting zipped up on my desktop, I unzipped a few TO ZIP DISK. I then loaded up MPC Editor and created programs with these sounds, but since they already existed on the ZIP (in wav format) I didn't do an export that includes the sounds.....in other words, they weren't being converted from wav to snd. The pgm files were being created and put on the Zip only.

Now, after exporting both pgm and sound files, I can see they are snd format sounds. The PC says they are AU format when you go into the properties for one of them.

In summary:

On a classic, apparently, pgm's will only work with sounds in the snd format.

Go to 1.72 for 2k classic, is that what you are on?

Yeah, I love my 2k, but this is a pain and one of the reasons I'm thinking of switching up to the XL or even a 2500. (others are lack of folder support and only 1 pgm at a time)
If you're on a mac you can use mpcpgmmaker to make pgms and convert wav to snd at the same time though

Yea lamp, got the current OS. Doesnt change the no folder support or this pgm issue tho.

Original issue 2KXL is the MPC to have, for my money anyway. Glad my classic is only a backup. :D
