Hey.

Can I sample the control voltage signal from my MS-20 and then send it out of my 8-outs of the mpc?

In other words: can I use the 8-outs as a control voltage controller, or will I just fry my sampler's inputs this way?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

It won't work, and you might risk frying your mpc. There are MIDI-to-CV converters though, but they're not cheap.

Yeah. I thought as much.

I figured how to do what I wanted:

send a sine wave through the ms-20's external spund processor and then use the frequency to cv converter from that to control the synth.

That'll work til I get the cash to buy a good midi to cv converter.

Thanks for the reply.

yup, you don't want to do that. A 5 volt sine wave can cause some damage.

For a midi to CV converter, check out the Frostwave Quad Midi2CV. It can control 4 devices, or one device with outputs for all sorts of midi data.

I've heard that it actually works on some sound cards.. I tried it out w/ my delta 44 and modular, but no go. If you can't record a CV, you might be able to fool the MS-20 with audio. You could try creating a sine wave in Soundforge or something like that. Then play that audio through an output into your MS-20 CV inputs and see if it works. You might need to run it through an attenuator to get the level right. I do know there is something funky going on with MS-20 filters' resonance depending on the input signal's amplitude.. I've got a clone of the circuit and it is mental. If the sine wave works you could try some more radical shit, but test out that sine wave first. Hey it could free up for LFO for some other stuff. I'd be interested to hear if it works, let me know.

Forax, you on AH?

That clone, is it the Frostwave or did you build it?

Yeah I'm on AH.. how could you tell?

I did build the clone, but it was a 420 kit from MOTM so I didn't design it or anything. Someone posted some article about using/recording CVs from the computer on AH within the last few months or so. Check the archives and you might be able to find it.

The using the sound card to output CV's and all that MS-20 talk.

Obviously an analog literati ;)

I'm on there too. What MPC you rockin?

I'm using the MPC1000.. had it for a little while and love it so far. I never got into the whole PC sequencing thing. The MPC is a breeze. I need to get a midi-cv converter one of these days though.. I'm limited to sampling or 'playing' my synths.

Get the Frostwave midi to CV if you have less than 4 monosynths, I use it with my shit and it is great.

That frostwave looks nice.

Oh yeah, the MS-20 has a pitch to voltage converter built in, so thats what im using the sine wave with.

By Forax Thu May 20, 2004 6:23 am
Descartes, that is a smart work around using the pitch to voltage

Also, the Frostwave looks really nice, but I've only got 2 synths at the moment (SH-101 and MOTM modular) so the 4 channels is too much power for me and it is way out of my price range. The entire Frostwave line looks pretty neat actually. I'll probably get a Pro Solo or used Pro 2000 when I can afford it. As long as it has dinsync then I can use triggers from a drum machine to trigger the 101's sequencer.
