Its all about the track feeling.

When the track is a cypher style track, the best thing to do is build a simple beat with one two change up to put the attention on the mcee.This way you can blend it out when a tight punchline comes up without giving the listener the feeling that the instrumental is beeing turned off.

Things usually are never complex for a good reason.

if u want the sample to stand out than make the drums simple. if u want the drums to stand out than make them complex and leave the sample simple.

and i agree with descartes. most drums tracks are simple for a reason. whether it be lettin the sample stand out more or just keepin it simple for a rapper. and all the shit i like have simple drums too.

there you go! Soooooooo true. Especially #1. but, for my 2 cents i have to agree, as its been stated, theres a time and place for everything. Nothing like a complex beat but,I try to flip it up. Keep all kinds of artillary. Whenever I do my research the classics are almost ALWAYS simple. Never really want to over shine the mc. Make it simple and sweet!

That's probably how shadow and RJD2 started flippin too. To me beats are kind of like women they come and go, or sometimes go without comin but you never get the one you want until your not expecting it. You can bang on the pads all day trying to make something that sounds a certain way but alot of the time it's like let's see what happens when i flip it like this. Then you got your vibe going like aw shiittte i can work this into something. And just like bitches you gotta work them beats
