Myspace will not get you signed...WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS....

I just wanted to post that simple statement to anybody and everybody trying to become a successful music producer as I am. Take some deep thoughts at this and realize that you (and I'm saying "you" as everyone - including me) has to get out of the basement to make it anywhere in the Biz. Too many producers that think they are a "good" on so many forums (especially all those 12 year olds over at Futureproducers.com) have this impression that relying on getting hits on myspace and setting up the "whore train" is going to give them the shot at hitting the big leagues.
I took me awhile to realize this, but it is true. I've decided to get my ass up and actually do something with my music. I feel like us as producers need to start setting goals if they are serious about making it into the music business. Which gets me to...

My first goal that i've come up with is going to next years One Stop Producers Convention. That gives me a year to get my shiit together and get better with my beats. Plus im gonna start collaborating as well with anybody and everybody. I wanna attempt at what I want to do now, because I definently do not want to become some 28 years old, broke, with kids, thats keep telling everybody "Im gonna make it." or some dude that teaches music at a school for low wages.

What are your goals?

when most "producers" start out all they care about is getting popular, as time moves on and they are no closer to being signed they slowly move into the territory of "gear geek". there is nothing wrong with being an equipment nerd but realise that just because you know everything about musical gear doesn't mean that you're any good. some of the most knowledgeable peeps here and on other producer oriented sites make average music at best and some of them have studios that i would literally kill for.

that's why i aim low.

U dont always have to go to a fancy convention to get somewhere. I just hooked up with local rappers and singers. Fact is everybody these days wants to be a rapper, but a less portion is seekin to be producers. I figured if i just start sellin beats to a lot of people eventually ill establish a name for myself, and look at me now. I am about to air on Seattles #1 hip hop station, i know it aint much to speak of, but im advancing. i have made alot of good connections through dj's at clubs, and promoters. it's all about who u know, so make friends .

yeah but at least you are making progress and actually trying to do something. Thats basically the point that I was trying to get across. I know that the convention isn't gonna get me automatically signed but it sets myself a goal to get better and compete with those industry ready cats out there.

I feel you on dat. My gurl says at times that i care more for my music then i do for her. I wouldnt say i do, but i just have a passion for the music. Have you ever felt like ya meant to do this, u r meant for somthing great, but u can't seem to find a way to express this, because everybody seems to think u just another hotshot tryin to git their 15 minutes of fame? I been swadded many times but i know i won't stop till i git there. I used to do this just for the fun of it. i really dont care if i dont git rich over this. I just see my music as a expression of art, and if i dont become rich I at least want my music to be heard.

yo, i tolly feel u on that... ive been makin stuff for my own self ... for something like 5 years, in my bedroom, some friends made tracks with some old school loops i used to produce but since a couple of years i got the ambition that one day i would make something FRESH and DOPE and i started experimenting with a lot more ''techniques''... more composition.. and then i realized that in order to ''make it'' one day, u HAVE to get out of the basement... push ur stuff, sometimes be generous enough to give beats away and stuff like that (although i dislike the idea of being everybody's biitchh)..

And i think this whole hustling and pushing ur beats is particularly true when u have a particular esthetic. When ur style isnt Typical, u have to get people more familiar with it...

Also, making concrete stuff, collaborating and shit feeds ur creativity. I got to a point where im kinda stuck with my music... and i guess collabs make me affirm my style and get a clearer view of what i lack in... concretely.

the ''hard-to-get-what-the-fck-is-he-talkin-about'' part

The stressful part is when ur some kind of a COMPLETE musical act.. Some beatmakers think in a really abstract, somehow wide way... where they see a whole concept when they make a beat... like they would feel like their beat would be senseless if not part of a big concept, as an album + a frontman with a tight rapper outfit... SOME OF U MAY NOT UNDERSTAND THAT PART BUT THOSE OF U WHO R LIKE ME WILL, trust me lol ... My advice to them is : be concrete, make beats, here and now, finish ur beats, make stuff that people will hear and stop justyfing by ''well if it would be a real beat i would add a bass and a tighter snare''.. DO IT...

Bboys, i would end this message by tellin all of yall to keep focus on bringing the heat to ur respective neighborhoods, i know we all work kinda really hard and i really think some of u here who do it with heart will push it far enough so we can all appreciate ur stuff...

Sounds good man... i feel what u sayin. I got to da point where i needed somthin fresh to start over with so i joined ur cult and went from a yamaha motif es to a mpc2500 i still use the motif tho

my goals? to make good music, period. im not specifically tryin to be no big name producer. dont get me wrong im still networking and working with mcs, but im not doin this for a career or money. it would be nice if that happened but thats not my focus. i make music cuz i love making music and i love hip hop. everyone wants to be the next big name producer, i just want to make dope music. no one seems to do this out of love no more its with a career in mind or stacks of chips, peace

Tell that to my woman, she gets so caught up with my music. It bugs her that i spent so much time with my music.

It's all about the love of the music no matter what your intended goals are. You can't be creating an art and not love the sounds.

My overall goals are to not do the 9-5, not do any f**k with ya head shift work. But to support myself with doing something I enjoy...MUSIC

Hell yeah... i was in guitarcenter just last nyte. planned only to be there for a minute, well a minute turned into 2 hours, and i was still shoppin when they closed down lol. i ended up walkin out with a bunch of 1/4" audio cables, a keyboard stand, and a behringer mixer.

Not true. I heard if you get 250,000 Myspace plays, an exec from Columbia Records is going to swoop down into your basement lab or whatever and carry you off, to work with all the big names in the game. Groupies be all over you and you're just like smilin' and puffin' on a blunt...
