Is any one using their MPC for live performances?

If you are, What style do you use it for? Whats your set up on stage? Hows the crowds reaction?

I went to RJD2's show last sunday, and he had 4 turntables and a MPC2000XL. He was playing beats from the MP and also playing so weird sounding organs on the pads. His ish was tight.

i'm glad he's playing something. i saw him open a prefuse show and it was mad dissapointing. all he did was spin and baby skratch.

Yeah Rjd2's latest tour has been alright. Here in Toronto the audio was wack for the first half of the show, but fixed midway. Four turntables and an MPC, that man was busy on stage.

Prefuse 73 uses an MPC on stage too. And The last Ninjatune show I went to, Sixtoo and P-Love were smashing on one.

The first time I saw one used live was Anti-pop Consortium. No that was a great show... too bad they split.

And yo effekt, did you hear that Diverse and his DJ got all their vinyl stolen in Montreal in their hotel on Sunday?

i posted in the topic and didn't really speak on the topic. i know that odd nosdam, from anticon use a few during shows. my friend used one on stage when he was in a group, he didn't rhyme though, he only made beats and skratched. when i saw prefuse it more seemed that he was just letting the mpc play in song mode and not even **** with the tuning or effects. but atleast he was playing along with it on some synth. i just think that there's no point to the live show if the songs don't sound different then they would/do on record. prefuse had a drummer and all, but he also had the drum tracks playing on the mpc. the sickest part of the show was during the encore the drummer, prefuse and beans came out to do some original, maybe inprovised shit. it was dope prefuse on keys and beans on the moog. i talk to much

yea, I heard of it...but they could have expected it...Montreal is a savage town I't not the first time ish gets stolen after the show. Ohhh and they suck on stage. They were repeting the refrain for like 2min in their every song, and for like 5min at the end of each song. ... But they are good enough to be "crowd wormers".

As for the RJD, from what i saw, the sound was good and he was mixing his tracks together wery well, the only problem was that from time to time, he "got lost" in his gear. I mean, he was scratching on one table and all of the sudden some other beat comes in, because he forgotten to bring the fader down or press Stop o the table his was not using. Anyways,..small details like that. But the whole show was great, I thing that he is really into in his music and the only thing he is missing is the experience on stage.

Anyways, comming back to using MPC in life performences, the possibilities are endless, and thais exactly what is so great about the MPC. You can use it for drums, or play the pads with samples or use the pads as a keyboard. You can even use the MPC as a MIDI controller for all the other gear on stage (the possibilities are limited, but it is still doable).
In our underground scene, the most popular use ot the MP is to play beats for the MCs to rhyme on, and for the DJ to scratch on.

i got the mpc to avoid using a laptop live...so: running the mpc, a yamaha su700 loop sampler (well wicked, especially with the mpc), microkorg, evolver synth, a yamaha qy70 and su10, and fx (using a studio quad now, but will probably replace it with a kaoss pad)...small sweet set-up.

funny thing is...i have loads of shit in my home studio, all based around the mac, but i'm using the 'live' set-up to do most of my new tracks...it's just simpler, cleaner and generally more fun.

I work like sans soleil mentioned above. I have a full studio setup that is parked in the studio and a separate portable `live` rig. The studio setup is geared towards multi-track recording, effects, editing. Mostly time consuming stuff that revolves around polishing work. The live rig is smaller and simpler with a single bus mixer and gear with onboard effects. One or two MPC's and a couple of synths.

I've done live work with the MPC2000, MPC3000 and MPC2000XL. I also have the MPC1000 and while I have not gigged with it yet, I do not see it as being any less capable of doing what the other machines are capable.

The machine alone is not going to make a crowd react. There is stuff more complex than even I understand needed to actively involve the crowd.
