Slice feature on the XL

Hey Yall, anyone know how to properly use the slice function in the sample trim section of the 2000XL? I can't seem to cut any other size than it already has preset. Is there a better way to autoslice the 16 regions, say, for example, define a one-bar section, and have it chop the same length end to end for the 16 zones. If it don't do that, what can it do?

I've been wondering the same things myself, I thought I had MORE control over a sample this way, not LESS, as it appears when I try to slice and Zone sounds. How to use the function in detail isn't clear to me at all.

It would be better, or I will say EASIER to use software. It's definitely a lot faster.

Yo, Boutit, do you know if you can change the size of the slices or detect transients, or is it just the same size zone, 16 times down the lenght of the sample. Cus, tight now, that's all I can get it to do!

FunkDoc'04...Zone is better on the 2000, where if you just trim, you dump the unused parts of the sample from memory, whereas zone makes a copy. But on the XL, you can choose to make a copy from the cut in the trim section. I don't really get the zone/slice on the XL. Bbout it...how Bbout it? (I'm friggin hillarious)

The slice fuction on the MP works just as good as softwear (its just the visual drawbacks that kinda sets them apart)

To answer your question, yes u can control the zone range. When u got ur loop or watever, go into the trim screen, hit ZONE /F3. Mark out the range of your 1st slice (with your eyes)...Now, make sure ZONE:1 is selected. Then mess with the start & end times for that zone (Where the hit will start and end....using the Jog wheel) - Do this for each zone then ur good to go.
Each Zone split up into sections just the way u like

Nb: you dont have to slice up into 16 Zones...To change the value, Highlight ZONE:1 and press OPEN WINDOW...Make changes here....The bigger the slices, the less zones u need .....Remember to set the zones b4 u set slice points tho

Word, Brav, you right on point. I normally do that w/ zone, but I am still boggled by this slice feature. So, is it: just a preset length for the 'slice' function, no matter what; it just hacks the 16 and you can throw that on a pgm? Or is it: you adjust each one, and then the slice cuts them all and makes a program out of them? I think you answered this already at the bottom, just to clarify...What I guess I'm trying to do is, once you set the first zone, if you like the loop, ie 2 bars, will it just split the rest up at that same length down the waveform?
I guess if it don't, I'll just leave the length on FIXED, punch in the end number from the first as the start on the second, and so forth down the length of the sample.

Good look mang! I am now the 34th degree master of the Slice feature!
I'm turning 16 bar loops into pragrams of 64 quarter note chops and ish!
Taking original 16 zones, adjust each bar, then zone out each bar into 4 zones each for quarter notes. SIIIIIIIIIIICK!!

speaking of zones and stuff,,,how can you properly assign sounds after selectiing the number of zones.....im asking cuz when i assign to like 4 pads and say yes to create new program its erases all my old sounds from all my buttons.

Ok, hope I explain this in a manner that is not confusing...
You are not actually erasing the sounds from the pads. When you load or create a new program, the memory just makes that new program sit on 'drum1'. You can have many programs, but only four can be used in a particular setup at one time. For example, say you got 'efunk drms 1' as your first program, assigned to drum 1. If you load or create a new program (including saying 'yes' to slice auto-creating a new pgm) it will move the first to be in DRUM2. So, all you gotta do is, hit shift+program, then select DRUM1, and at the top-left, select which program you want to be 'drum 1'. The same for the remaining 3 drum programs. You can have any one of many pgm sit in DRUM 1-4, but making a new one is always gonna be placed on drum 1; You adjust it afterword. Then you can mix match and interchange, but make sure when you save, if you are using more than one program, to save as a .aps, so 'All Programs and Samples'

i personally don't dig the zone all that much.. i seem to do better when i sample in each piece and then trim them.
usually when i do zone, i do just as bravo said.. except after i hit zone, it seems like the samples never chop exactly how i told them to.. they're always a little off..
another way- i may just take the loop, copy it 8 times, then trim each of them to get the pieces i want. it's always important that all the chops connect well tho, because i hate the sound of gaps in between slices.. it's gotta be chopped smooth and precise.
