Just wondering if anyone has both and what would you recommend? I have a mpc 1000 and want to upgrade. Also was wondering...when you connect the MV 8009 to a monitor does it display in color or is that just for the 8800?

I am sure the 8000 displays the monitor output in color.

I have never used a MPC 1000, but i have a 2000xl and an MV 8000. I would definitely recommend the 8800 as an upgrade. They have been going for about the same price as an 8000 on ebay.

I have a question now. When you've got your sample source connected to your 1000, can you hear that audio source playing while making beats? On the 2000xl you can't hear what's connected to the inputs until you go into sample mode. That sucks.

Not a fair comparison.
If you own a 1k get the new Akai pads and go OS2 before you go 2500.
I'm now starting to believe the 1k is built better overall than the 2500.
If you want to get rid of the 1k then it's MV-8800 (unless you find a cheap 8000 deal).

My only worry is the lack of midi conects on the MV's. i believe the 2500 has 4 midi outs. I could control mad stuff.

I have yet to see someone fully exhaust 1 MIDI Channel let alone 32 or 64 when the hardware is doing most of the sound generation..

The real idea behind the multiple MIDI outs is to eliminate MIDI traffic jams and bottlenecking. Because you can do a program changes within your sequences theres no need to worry about that.

I know people talk about needing 64 MIDI channels but I have yet to hear a hardware produced track that required anything even remotely close to that. There are some I'm sure but they are rare. Hell, mist HipHop beats rarely venture beyond 8 or 9 tracks.

Don't get wrapped up in such spec chasing.

1 word ..... Sysex

I'm a hardware only guy... computer is used to record wav files.... Many of my synths are sysex only for real time changes. You get enough real time sysex messages flowing through and you'll see it bog down an output... you will definitely see lags and glitches.

So yea, you can do a program change to switch your synth to a particular patch, but once your track gets going and your changing in real time the filter, envelopes and other parameters of mutliple synths on the same output and you'll notice it...

But since the original poster is using a 1000, he should be fine with the 2 outs that the MV gives...

I personally say the answer to his questions is neither MV or 2500, it's find a used 4000... but for how I work that's the only answer until they make the MV series more live friendly... (they really need to use a concept like the "Multi" from the 4000 that can be changed when patterns are changed to implement this right..)

But the original poster never indicated "why" they want to upgrade. What type of features is one wanting to upgrade. Where it the 1000 faiing you and what are you expecting out of upgrading? Very important questions so that you can get the correct piece of gear for your particular needs..

Cheers,
Dave

You can still get 4k's, what they did was discontinue them but they are still shipping units that are basically remanufactured units to the dealers.
No telling how long that will take to exhaust supplies.

You have to learn to use the re-sampling on the MV and other methods to build your songs like you are working with a DAW.

It's almost 2008 and still most devices have a screwed up way of dealing with SYSEX.
I'm long pass having great expectations from that world.

I was torn between the 2 units also. Luckily I found a good deal on a MV-8000 with the VGA/Mouse connection so I went with it. I'm glad I did
It's a big learning curve coming from the MPC2000XL but it can be done.

Yessir. The MV8000 will display in color when hooked up with the VGA. I have a 2000XL SE (chrome) and YES there is a learning curve moving up to the MV. Be patient with it.

If you have a 1k and don't have the JJOS, the 2500 isn't really much of an upgrade from the JJOS on the 1k, save for the better built chassis, qlinks and 2 extra outputs. Don't sleep on the JJOS man.

i had mpc 2.5k for 2 years and i switched to mv few days ago.. first i was disappointed, because i was lost.. you know i was so used to mpc that i couldn't make even single beat with it.. yeah the learning curve is big but you'll have to be patient. and after few days i'm making decent beats with it.. if you want to check it out (http://www.myspace.com/maramice) and working flow is becoming faster and faster.. i'm recommending this, i feel like it has better sound than 2.5k.. way better effects and filters.. and i love that you can add effect to your input and sample through effects.. like 12bit.. i haven't had any trouble with the quantize, well i don't use timing.. but i have heard someone complaining about mvs timing, maybe it's different to mpc with same swing percentages ..
