installing custom splash screens?

anybody know how to upload custom splash screens...
iv seen a few posted about and dont know how to
1) store them on the flash card (i.e. what format they need to be)
2) load them as the default onto my 1000 when i put the flash card in the reader

any help would b much appreciated
