Is there any point to digging for Soul records anymore?

@ people thinking soul/funk is done. man dig deeper than meters & co. i can show you soul records that most people never have seen nor knew it existed. and not all soul is soul like the stereotype, there is more different types of soul then people live in china...

If you are just diggin for samples and you're not a fan of funk/soul then fair enough, and I can understand your point about wannabee beatmakers copping loads of sh*t cause their heros have sampled it. But newbs might be copping that sh*t to learn how it's done, and there ain't no harm in a little education.

Personally I love funk, not soul so much (unless it's funky ). But I couldn't give a sh*t whos sampled what in the past. When I buy funk I buy it to listen to. But if I come across something that I think I can use then I'll use it.

the (2)dollar bin is great and i find heat in there all the time..i dont grip records because of who sampled it. i have a stack of ish i consider selling on ebay because its a crap record w/ a shadow sample that goes for $35..do i think that funk/soul is an abused genre at times by samplists? yes.
do i think that its over? hell no.
a recent example:
i got another mandrill record, the one w/ the obvious old PE wild synth style lead and heavy bass. classic, and unmistakeable. then a track or two later its a super mellow, long interludish track w/intruments to sample that dont sound too very 'funk' or 'soul' even before any chopping goes on..it would take a serious 'beathead' to really name that sample..
youre saying dig outside of soul to find ish. im saying dig the soul ALSO..i just happen to find funk/soul to be what i like most.

I love the meters. ive been bumping their S/T for a looonnng time. theres more out there than the meters but really HONESTLY i would love to know what album is harder from begining to end than that one..Then tell me its gonna be in the dollar bins...

well put it like this, i look for good sounds in every genre. soul in my opinion has alot of beautiful shit, so if i like ill prolly get it, regardless. you will be surprised how the chopping skill can fool ppl

but just like everyone else i like that rare stuff that i think nobody might know about.

I buy anything, but when it comes to sampling, it's all about the sound that your trying to create. Yes, the soul section has been picked through, but technology keeps it very much alive. What I mean is that in the beginning, producers would simply loop a sample. Later, they grabbed the drums. Soon after they grabbed the vocals and sped it up, and now, I'm on the phase of taking instruments and making kits from individual sounds. Personally, I dig through everything, but your simply not going to get a nice selection of funky bass notes easily off a rock record. Not to say there's no rock records with dope bass sounds, but it's way easier to pick up a funk record and find one, so eash genre..same goes with guitars. If i want a really nice distorted guitar, it's much easier for me to look in the rock section to find what I need. See my point? So there will never be an end for searching through soul records, it's all in what the individual wants. McDonalds has been served to billions, and people still want burgers! (have you tried the cherry pies? Damn, them schyts is nice!!)

try some disco house music i get a lot of samples from there like salsoul classics albums, katmandu (the breaks),disco circus, this is housemusic 4 those that dont know and i use it 4 sampling, loopin ,whatever man music is life so live,i love all genere of music no limits just dig.......PEACE

i just watched crate diggerz 2 with pete rock and ceg dee and a bunch a others and never did i hear talk like this. yes a lot of its been sampled and ripped apart but there are a shit-ton of ways to flip something. if you cant hear a sample and think outside of the way that producer flipped it previously what are you doing chopping shit? wheres the creativity???

Not to offend anybody , but I think it has alot to do with how you were brought up in the first place. If your parents were playing gospel , soul , blues and jazz records since you were a kid , you know while they were cooking or when you had to clean up , that music just gets in you for life . Just like I notice alot of dudes who were brought up on rock, that seems to be there foundation . Keep in mind also that funk and soul can be found on anything . With me it's the other way around , jazz and soul is the easiest music for me to sit and listen to , so I'll buy it just for that . Easy listening ,prog-rock etc I usually buy for sampling.

I used to be one of those kids who buys records because my idols sampled them. Theres nothing wrong with trying to impersonate your idols when your young, but i've grown up and i only buy records i'll enjoy listening to.


I know digging is about digging for records no-one else has, but i just don't get this nerdy internet soulstrut culture of spending $$$$$$ on records to show off and put it on a f*cking wall or sumthin. What a waste! Records are for listening to. Life is short and i can't take my records with me when i die lol

Having a massive record collection full of so called 'rare' records doesn't mean you have talent or anything as well. Anyone with money these days can buy a piece of music history on Ebay. Records can't buy you talent.


When i buy records i check for stuff i can listen to and enjoy. I don't give a toss if its rare or not. Most 'rare' records that are always talking about on the internet everyone rants about are well known now anyways so whats the point? Just to say you own a bit of rareness?


and i never look at the cover for a view of the track. So what if it has black guys with afros or dirty ass hippies on the cover? Buy a portable! In my experience it might be wack unfunky sh*t.

So what if kids want to sample and buy soul. Thats their thing and theres always something somebody has missed out on. Everyone should do their own thing and leave people to do theirs. You can't force people to buy and sample bloody hungarian, russian prog-funk jazz or some shit like that.

Only idiots care about what other people are doing. You should be buying records because you love listening to them and love music. They beautiful to me and thats all that matters.

nope, still tons of good stuff out there. The amount of soul music that came out in the late 60's and 70's is incredible, besides if someone used a sample doesn't mean you can't flip it in another way. In any case, I would really thank you alll if you stopped buying Soul, Funk & Jazz records.
Seriously, I don't mean to be harsh but this whole thread seems retarded to me. Good music is good music. So who really gives a f*ck if the record has been sampled. That won't stop me from getting as many James Brown,Meters,Cymande, etc ..., records as I possibly can because its good music and I even rather listen to it and NOT sample it.
