im sick of all those drums you get now adays so i mostly sample my drums from songs like for instance in my latest sampled track (which ill upload soon) which has the kick which i then eq'd out and the stadium clap from We Will Rock You by queen...makes heavy hits:P

All I can say is start from the roots of good kicks, and snares...Jazz...Art Blakey, Buddy Rich...I don't know what you prefer in your tracks...But I like the vintage grimmey vibe sound that these jazz drummers have to offer...You can't expect to be a good producer if you don't like diggin for the jewel of your track. Drums are infinite depends what kind of knowledge you have behind music. Me, I grew up around jazz, oldies, classic rock, bossa nova jazz. Just expand your horizons and test various genres of music. You won't be disappointed on what you might come across...OnE

Not everything will workout in your favor.... You just gotta keep trying and you'll eventually get a good ear and hear almost off the bat if you can use something or not.

Your "odds" get better over time when your ears get better tuned to your workflow and imagination when you hear something interesting.

I have the same frustration. I'll share what I've done so far in my search for the perfect bass drum and snare:
-sample single drum hits and snares of course
-change the tuning of each
-layer the same drum with different tunings and different volumes
-change the attack, so long vibrating bass drums can knock a little harder
-a loud snare can be tuned low enough to help out a lacking bass drum
same for snares.
also, you can make some stuff from noise. generate noise in a sound editor and record it. **** with the pitch, speed, attack, duration of the thing and u can turn it into a snare or hi hat

and yea all the hi hats suck balls except for a couple. I like Q1 and Q2 kits the best

you say change the attack on bass drums. wouldnt changing the attack in the mpc soften the kick? i've actually done this before but it was on purpose. the kick had a long tail on it. i did it to kinda make a soft but really bassy kick. which was of course put behind a normal weaker kick drum. it worked out ok. but im not sure adding attack to a kick drum will make it knock harder. if anything, adding some decay to cut off the tail of the kick would make it seem like its kicking a bit harder. but even that might not work. hey, i could be wrong though you know?
