Great. I plan to have 1 card as a library of sounds that I've sampled, while the other one will contain my beats.

had the same issue with updating my os. i have an internal zip and i just took the drive out my mpc, into my pc and copied the os onto a zip. then i just put the zip drive back in my mpc and updated the os from there.
i might have had to change the jumper from master to slave or something

That could be a possibility, but I have just a Macbook. Maybe I can use one of the computers at work if I have no other options.

Unless that's what you do at work, or you have a friend in IT, you DON'T want to be opening computers at work and installing and uninstalling hardware B.

Peace,

Hehe, you're right. I don't think I will do that. Not because I can't do it (I've build my own computers in the past), but just because I don't think my boss would allow that.

I'll have to pray that my MPC is nice and lets me upgrade to 1.20 via a Flash Card even though my OS at the moment is 1.07.

Well guys, the scenario I feared has happened.

I installed the MCD from VSTservice. I plugged the two cabels exactly where the cables of my zip drive used to be. I had two places to plug the ribbon cable, and I plugged in the slot closest to the MCD just where the zip drive where connected (the IDE/Atapi slot)

I must add that the ribbon cable was very long, so I had to sweat a bit to make it fit under the bottom plate of the MPC.

I turned the MPC on with the MCD connected, and everything worked fine. A green light flashed for 1 second in the MCD so it has power. Everytime I put my flash card in the MCD gives me a one second green flash. So something is happening and working.

But when I go into the load screen (shift+load) the MPC cant find any drive. No floppy (which I guess the MCD is, right?), and no SCSI 0-5....
I tried to restart several times but the same happen over and over again.

The guy at VST service said before I ordered the MCD that I shall just put the flash card in (which has OS 1.20 installed) and upgrade my OS. 1.07 should be able to read a MCD he said. The same said a guy in this thread.

I can't think of any other reason than that the problem is that OS 1.07 is not compatible with a MCD.

What do you think? Is it possible that I did something wrong during the installation? The MCD powers up but its not connected in a way. The ribbon cable (the flat and big one) was a bit difficult to connect. I didnt press it hard down, but just lightly and snapped it on with the two "connection ears". I guess it should be ok as long as those "ears" holds it down?

Does it look like I have to get a zip disk with OS 1.20 and put my zip drive back and upgrade before I install the MCD?

Check your jumper settings. Its in the back of your drive. between the ribbon cable and power adapter. Make sure there is a black square peg on two of the pins. I had this problem and it drove me nuts until I realized that it may just be the jumpers.

VST service wrote in the installation manual that they have put the jumper as the master, which should be correct. This morning I opened the MPC again just to make sure the jumper settings were OK.

My MCD have to possibilities when it comes to jumpers, right and left. VST service had put it to the left (close to the ribbon cable). On the circuit board that was marked as 2. I got my hopes up and thought this could mean that the MCD was a slave now. So I changed the jumper to the other possible setting, the right, marked as 1 on the circuit board and it is close to the other cable, the thin smalll one. I hoped this meant that the MCD was now the primary drive/master and not the secondary drive/slave. I dont know if these numbers on the circuit board mean anything, but I hoped it did.

I powered up my MPC and the same happen as before I changed the jumper setting. The MPC can't find a floppy drive, no SCSI drives and thats all I can choose. I have no option to choose ATAPI, which should be possible if my MPC recognises the MCD. The MCD powers up when I turn on the MPC, and it also shows a green light when I put in or take out my flash card.

Here's some words from Lampdog:
Also pay attention to pg 153 2kxl manual.

Change it from

FLOPPY (starts up and looks for floppy)

to

ATAPI (starts up and looks for atapi/ide).*

MPC cannot see the atapi if the jumper settings are wrong. Therefore it won't show in the window like on the page I pointed you to.

This is not possible for me. I can only choose between Floppy Drive, Flash Memory and different SCSI drives. My MPC can't find any of those, except the Flash Memory (yay, looks like I have that installed at least!)

I assume that if the MCD is working and everything is OK, I should be able to see the ATAPI choice in the load menu right? Not matter which Flash Card I put in? Because I have only a 1GB card at the moment, and it could be that OS 1.07 doesn't support that.

But this shouldn't matter. If it works I can choose ATAPI in the load menu no matter what. True or false?

I just talked with VST Service and they told me that it looks like I have everything plugged in correctly (exactly where I had my Zip drive plugged in), and they suggested that I try to install the 1.20 OS. If that doesnt work I have to send the MCD back and get a new one.

So, anyone here that can supply me with a Zip Diskette with OS 1.20 on? I would be forever grateful, and will of course pay all the expenses.

I live in France.

A cardreader that works correctly does not need os 1.20.

Are you sure?

Cause I got it from VST service and for that price it better work!

I just put back my Zip Drive and it works perfectly. It is also an ATAPI device so its very strange that another ATAPI device (the MCD) doesn't work.

Before I send it back to them to get a new one I need to know a thing first: Will the MCD be recognised by the MPC without any Flash Card in it? Because all I have is a 1GB card and maybe the MCD will only be recognised by the MPC if I have a smaller card in it? (because OS 1.07 doesnt accept 1gb cards)

This sound stupid and I guess it shouldnt matter. The MPC should recognise the MCD as an ATAPI device without any flash card in it.

Positive! I use a cardreader with os 1.14

Correct!

Did you check all the jumpers are set correctly? Make sure the reader iis set to MASTER.

I use a MCD in my 2kxl with 114 also.

Thanks guys.

This sounds like a dead MCD.

My MCD has two Jumper settings, and I've tested them both with the exact same result (the MCD powers up, but the MPC can't find it).

Can I use the exact same cables for my MCD as for my Zip Drive? Just thought I could test the cables of the Zip Drive on my MCD just to test if it could be the cables that are defect. I guess this is not likely, but I can at least eliminate that as a possiblity.

So if an OS upgrade (1.07->1.20) or changing the cables doesn't work, then it is definately a dead MCD.

Maybe I should just send it back immediately, because it looks very likely that it was dead on arrival....

Internal atapi zip, 40pin ribbon data cable? Yes, it's the same data and power cable for both devices, zip and MCD.... Go ahead and try it.

Also, make sure the red part of the data cable is plugged in close to power. If the red data wire is NOT close to power your data cable is backwards...

If the data cable is keyed (can only be connected one way) then don't worry about the above statement.

Cheers!

I'll try it after I get back from work. I really hope it works as I would hate to wait another two weeks to get my new MCD.

If it is any europeans here that can supply me with a zip disk with OS 1.20 please contact me. I'll pay all the expenses ++

It's all good guys!

I replaced the new (!) cables (both of them) with the old ones that belonged to the Zip Drive, and now the MCD works perfectly. I upgraded the OS from the flash card and have now OS 1.20.

Here's some info in case other search information about the same subject in the future:

1. OS 1.07 works with a MCD/Card Reader.
2. Always check the jumper. VST Service stated in their manual that they had put the jumper to master. This was not true in my case. I had to change it.
3. Check your cables ;)
