Buying an Mpc2000xl

Hi all, first post,

I've been thinking about making beats and just messing around as a hobbie so I want an mpc, I've just been reading reviews on this websites and all threads possible learning about what everything is and does literally from scratch, I dont want to rush out and just buy anything and think that its going to work for me but I have been thinking of getting a 200xl second hand maybe from ebay or some other classified websites.

Just wanted to know any tips on what I should look out for when buying one.

I personally wouldn't trust buying one online. You never know if something might be broken. If you can find a used one locally... I'd just browse through all the menues and make sure all the buttons work. Check the pads and see if they can load samples to them to see if they work.

hmm i guess so, I've never used one before let alone know how to, if i was to buy online should i make him load a few samples? and show me what he can do with it? i dont think i can afford a new one.

Find one that you can test before buying.

Test the following:
- sample something (test ins & outs)
- test the note variation slider (easiest way I think is to go to the trim screen, go to start or end, hold shift and move the slider)
- test if the pads work
- check if the screen is still good (bright)
- save a sample to disk/zip/cf card
- test the buttons

If you know somebody with an xl (or another mpc), take him along with you.

Price is depending on the condition and expansions (eb fx card, 8 outs, ... )

And test that the jog wheel works as expected. Those tend to wear out first.

i understand that buying a brand new one would be fab, but theres not that many about in the uk on the web, ive seen prices for £780 ($1560) for a MPC2000XL MCD, Is there anything next best to this brand new?

if you do buy one used online, make sure there is a money back guarantee. That way if something is broken on you can get your money back.

Buy it used from a dealer via eBay. If you don't find some in the UK, look at german eBay.

i got my 2000xl on ebay, just be sure to read the listing very carefully!! if you are patient u can get one fully maxed for 550-650.........i have watched them go again and again, just wait, wish i had all i got was ram that i replaced any way.

so with a fully maxed one id get 32mb of ram instead of 2mb? and u get the equaliser? am i right? are there any links on this site sayin that what they do and stuff i have used the search link but usually just find threads of people who dont know how to get em connected or some other issue cheers

buy off ebay, but make sure to read the listing carefully several times, ask the seller as much as you feel the need to, including is it in full working order, only pay by paypal and only when paypal buyer protection is offered, if the unit doesn't arrive or arrives not as described (ie with faults) make sure to open a paypal dispute within 20 days. if you follow those steps you should be ok

make sure you get the full 32megs ram or at least order that separately off ebay if the unit doesn't have it, i wouldn't work with any less than that if i could help it

What equaliser?

sorry i meant the effects board

That doesn't come with the memory expansion.

nope, i meant if the mpc was fully maxed , would it just mean id have 32mb ram and an effects board as 2 add ons,? or does fully maxed just mean maximum amount of ram?
