I reported a rather serious bug to Akai some time ago, where sequences are corrupted by certain edits (moving notes around), with the result that notes are cut short and lost. I sent them several MIDI sequences that illustrate the bug. This thread describes it:

No need for that, afai am concerned, Akai has it's own bugtracker. Thanks for the offer though.

I still have a lot of sysex commands I haven't tried, but have at least gone through most of the important ones. Some of the ones mentioned in the past worked fine for me, so people must have been doing something wrong. For example, feline mentioned LFO waveform select, but I had no problems with this once a program and keygroup was selected. If you figure ak.sys uses these commands, then all of those features should be working fine. If anyone else can't get anything to work, please post it here so we can verify. Hopefully my sysex guide will have a few people digging.

Here are a few I have noticed so far that I haven't figured out or do not work:

04 08 - Get list of supported filetypes returns no info.

2C 04 - q-link knob value set doesn't seem to do anything. What is that feature anyway?

30 10 - Arm recording doesnt do anything.

28 40-42 - midi song file functions do not work on 4k. Surprisingly, you CAN select a sequence in memory from this section. It really was meant for the Zs feature to play standard MIDI files with a simple player.

2A/2B - all commands do not seem to apply to 4k. Should there be more commands that apply to the 4k, or should it have its own section of sequencer commands?

So mainly, the biggest problem is that many of the features the 4k has that the Zs do not do not have are not in sysex. I personally have no interest in making a version of ak.sys that has the MPC's screen and buttons, so I can live with that. Also, there isn't too much of a need to control most sequencer parameters from within a sequence... but there are a few that would be really valuable in bold.

There is also the entire song section as well, but I would consider that much less important. Seq Edit and Step edit are more offline features (like sample editing) and were prob never meant to be implemented.

Missing from the Document is the Q-link SEND page parameters:

Finally the document has a list of keycodes for the Z's buttons. These do not match up with the 4k. I made a list of the ones I found. I didn't find anything for 0E, and still need to find SHIFT. This would only be useful if they redo the document... or one of you may find it useful.

one thing to show how this might be useful. The Sysex Guide goes
over doing a Mute for a Particular Part of a Mulit. But since there isn't a
Sequencer on the Z4/Z8 they never included anything for doing a
Track Mute via Sysex. We can only do Part Mute's but not Track Mutes.
If you seperate your drums on different tracks, you can see the difference
between muting a track and muting a part can be quite a bit.

If Track Mute via Sysex was available, I would be able to setup Custom Mute Groups via Sysex like on the 5000.

Nope. Not yet. Since the 5k is a little delayed, all other projects, including the eventual 4k bugfix update, will shift with it. No worries, I'll keep you all informed.
