i only have a mpc500, and i'm still deciding if i should buy the rest of the gear, but i was just curious about how everything connects together. i been on software for as long as i can remember and i want to try something new for a change so i decided to transition over to hardware. help a brotha out man! thanks in advance.

that's a horrible excuse for not knowing how to connect your gear. not to mention it's also a horrible excuse for wondering if you need a midi keyboard or not...

you can always go here to get answers for the kind of questions you have:

Kinda harsh. I've done it before too

Tweakheadz does have setup info and lots of other info though.

ok, i apologize for being harsh.

this person gave me the impression that he was trying to act like he knows something but really knows nothing by saying he's been using software forever... come on... even if you have experiece w/a daw, the concept of routing comes into play when using software.

figuring out that your mpc, and other modules are suppossed to hook up to your mixer, and your monitors hook up the mixer so you can hear what you're mixing shouldn't be some high minded science that only someone working on his doctorate can comprehend.

back in 1194-1995 when i was in highschool, i went to library and found these two books: "Modern Recording Techniques", and "The Musician's Home Recording Handbook". i found all my answers in those two books years before i even had the chance to practice any of it. now it's 2008, no has to do what i did anymore... finding answers to these kinds of questions is super easy now. -that's why i pointed out tweakheadz.com

also, why did you edit your post? first you call me a hater, now you say you're not perfect? anyways, you can consider me off your back. like i said before, i apologize for being harsh.

also, a bit of advice.

buy things little by little. i wouldn't recommend you by both a motif, and a triton in one shot. buy one, use the mpc to trigger it if you get a rack version. do everything you can learn the module inside and out... after you do this, it's a lot easier to decide if you want add a keyboard or not. by gettng to know one module first, it's easier decide what peice of gear you need next, because you'll know what you like, and don't like about about what you have now. you'll know what you can or can not do with what you have going on now.

say you get a motif first. spend 6 months getting intimate with it... who knows, you may get to the conclusion that it's all you need to make music. no need to spend on triton. if you decide you want add more synths, then it's better to buy something that will be the answer to the motif's shortcomings than buy something that does all the same things. say you want to start getting into some serious synthesis... then your next buy should probably be a virus, or a fusion... not a triton.

just because one has been producing beats on software doesn't mean that he has knowlege of routing hardware. i am living proof of this.

and to show that i have some experience in software, here's a beat i produced using fruity loops alone with nothing "routed" to this software.

heres how i have mine setup (its easy for me)

for a mixer i have a mackie (always will they are good in my eyes) mackies have alt outs on them (it provides an alternate route for sound to come out)

so what i do is i plug everything into the channels (synths mpcs drum machines etc.) and from the MAIN OUT is where my monitors go.

the alt outs lead into my compressors, dist, efxs etc. and into my mpc (either the 2500 or 1000) depending on which one i want to use. so when i want to record a synth ill go to the channel its plugged into and hit mute (hitting mute would normally cut the sound out but if you have something plugged into the mackie alt outs the sound goes there when you hit mute). this enables me to keep all of my instruments plugged into the mixer.

i could get a patchbay but thats more connect9ions than i need.

for your setup (im not really sure how others go about recording with mixers into the mpc) but you could go MAIN OUT into the mpc record in, then mpc stereo out into your monitors.

for the motif es rack you can control it one of a billion ways.
1. use your triton as a midi controller to use your motif like a keyboard.
2. record midi notes in your mpc and midi up your motif to the mpc (this wont record the actual sounds so you will always need to have your mpc midied up to the motif (i wouldnt recommend with your setup).
3. buy an alt controller so you can use the triton by itself at all times instead of switching up (controllers can be had for cheap and would recommend getting a dedicated keyboard controller).
just my 25 cents :)
