mixer or phono preamp for single turntable?

ello folks,

i jus got 1 deck (gemini TT03) to sample from but it needs powering cuz the levels too low on 'mic' or 'line' setting.

please could anyone recommend a good preamp or mixer to use, considering I only want to sample to the MPC and not mix records?

If you're not mixing records or DJ-ing then I suggest a basic studio mixer with phono inputs. This would also help if you get any other hardware synths or modules as your setup grows. I don't mix vinyl and use a little Behringer mixer (Eurorack UB802) - cheap (£30 on ebay) and does the job perfectly adequately.

i have the UB802 aswell but I can't make it amp the deck. I've tried phono out on the Gemini to 'tape in' on the UB802 and the sound is quiet with loads of hiss. Then i tried phono out to 1/4'' jacks (line in 5/6) and the same thing happened. When I plug MPC/laptop/HarddiskRecorder into 5/6 or the 'tape in' it works fine...

Ghostly, do you have a turntable with preamp built-in cuz that's the only thing I can think of to explain this?!

I think I'm gonna have to buy another unit because the UB802 has no built-in preamp...hope I'm wrong though.

Any ideas?

Hmmmmm I assumed not but maybe you're right. I just use a bog standard "record player" (lol), not into scratching or mixing vinyl (yet), and I assumed this didn't have any amplification. I've not got the manual for the UB802 and so assumed that it had a preamp. Damn! Lol. Sorry for my duff info! Just downloaded the manual for the Behringer, shoulda done this a while back!

I'm pretty sure there's no amp on the behringer except on channels 1 & 2 but they won't drive phono.

my friend has a preamped deck and runs it straight into his mixer but he tried it with my gemini and it didn't work on that either.

oh well, guess I'll have to go blow sum more cash, lol

a guy at turnkey store said I'd get a lot more for my $ if I get a dj mixer rather than a phono preamp, even though I don't mix vinyl. Anyone agree/disagree?
