i agree with mpc_monk to a certain extent.

but i myself am not going to jump straight into OS2 just because the mpc-forum society expects me to do so.

i'm happy working with OS1 for the minute, alot of people should be. alot of OS2's functions can be achieved with other equipment.

just my 2 cents.

peace.

Interesting topic.
I'd like to hear more from MPC_Monk and everyone else.
JJ OS2 is still very new at version 1.01.
Having said that, I'm sure there will be alot of future updates in the OS. So it's always a good thing to share our opinions and discuss what's needed in the future that'll make the existing functions better for live performance, as well as supplemental features that may be essential in a live situation.

My use of the word "supplemental" here is being used with practicality in mind, as opposed to talking about feature requests that are out of reach and have no relevance to improving the workflow.

its also refreshing to see a decent thread on here for a change.

Now that OS2 is 1.0 and beyond I think it's the perfect time to buy it. I just recently did and haven't gone back to OS 1 since. As of right now you can do anything you did in OS1 and then some.

Even if you don't use a lot of the newer features, simply the way that menus have been redesigned (especially the main screen) makes a lot of the more advanced features more easily presented and actually encourages you to work in more in-depth ways than you may be used to. You can still work the same way you used to, but everything is presented in a much more organized way and once you get the hang of things it's nice for your workflow.

Plus, I'm just glad to support this whole JJ thing any way I can.

I think everyone should buy OS2, a lot of people seem to forget that it doesn't install over OS1 but along side it.

You can switch back and forth between either OS without re flashing the ROM or anything - it's programmed to be dual-boot

Even if I bought OS2 and immediately switched back to OS1 I would still feel it was money well spent to support JJ OS, and I could always try it again when a later version comes out.

I'm all for supporting JJ. But I'm NOT all for the unanimous notion that more features are somehow inherently better, or somehow inherently lead to better music.

Most of us on here must believe that some part of that is true. Just given the fact that we all either have or want MPCs when computers can easily do everything the MPC can do, cheaper faster and better...

By dtaa pla muk Thu Mar 27, 2008 7:30 pm
i believe that informed use of these additional features will result in better music, simple example = the differnece in my drum programs from 1 to 2. the addition of adsr gives you FAR more shaping capability than you had before, and to be able to do this SOONER rather than in daw allows you much earlier control/access over your layering, resulting in a better conceptualized/closer to perfect track to work on in daw.

in short, implementation of ADSR and alternate loop result in being able to use a variety of samples in both a broader and more specific sense.

as for the computer>mpc thing, i agree with cheaper, but i cannot agree with faster or better for Just Plain Midi Sequencing.

currently, no program (not even guru, which would be the closest competitor) would allow me to be program or sequence drums with the speed, groove and elegance with which i feel like i experience in jjos2. to me the workflow, small screen, compact features, both hands in use > peering across the vast sequencer of a DAW program for deep editing and TC off recording of realtime pad-playing. if this was not the case, i certainly not be here, i'd be off on the Logic or Cubase boards,

FX, yes, hands down DAW beats the MPC
multitracking/macrosampling/audio tracks, HELL yes, DAW beats MPC
lots of things, DAW beats mpc, and that has its place
but once you've recorded your sample track and tracked it out into daw, it's often too late for individual applications of different ADSR settings per slice unless you want to REslice it and put it into yet another sampler.

as dvs said, too, improvements in lesser thought of areas (menus, browsing, shortcuts...hell, the sample list!!!) are often overlooked for how helpful/efficient they are.

Don't get me wrong I see where you are coming from, its just that for example, I have several ADSRs, and always have since my second sampler: a Roland S-550 back in 97 (before that it was my mentor's SP-12). So its not like its some new thing and 'wow JJ put an ADSR in the 1K woohoo where do I sign!' Personally, if I need one, I use one. Takes two seconds for me to throw the sample into Battery 3 or even resample it into my EMAX. Not having one in the 1k doesn't hinder me in any way, and actually it results in a faster workflow for me. For me.

Anyway I seriously doubt that you have the authority to say that anyone besides yourself would make better music if they make "informed use" of the new features in OS2. That relies on several assumptions that you can't make about other people's equipment, and their knowledge in the use and application of that equipment. If the use of OS2 helps you make better music, or make your music faster or whatever, then that's supercool. But that doesn't mean it will do the same for anyone else.

I had a problem with the 1k LPF on kick drums. So ok fine, that's a need. So I went and got a Peavey Spectrum Analog Filter. Problem solved. Now I just gotta figure out how to use it. But that's cool because its a need. OS2 to me is just another learning curve that I don't need, and I completely understand other people feeling that way.

There I agree. The Logic 8 upgrade focused almost solely on workflow. A lot of people feel that, besides the price drop and the loss of the dongle, that upgrade was wack. But for me, that was the best upgrade they put out since I bought it back in 2001. I would have paid $200 for a usability upgrade at any point and been totally happy with it.

I don't feel I have a deficit in usability with OS1 right now... Maybe I will feel it at some point, but until then I'm content.

I had prepared something longwinded and drawn out, not suprising I got tired looking at it myself, suffice to say Nym this is just my opinion but there are threads from others on the forum pointing out paticular basic issues with os 1 that they have been waiting on to be fixed and you're an upscale user that has helped many of us with work arounds for this and that so I know I don't need to enlighten you on the subject, personaly I think your knowledge of the mpc is one of those in the majority but I also think your workflow is in the minority and I know your speaking from the knowledge is power context but so is simplicity.

if there are no bugs or beneficial tweaks to be had with

muting
audio tracks
sample management
songmode

then i've got the best it can be and that's that, but if not I wish jj would do something about them.

By dtaa pla muk Fri Mar 28, 2008 12:26 pm
what's with the "if?" if you run into bugs, for the sake of all of us, hook us up with the details (see below)

but again monk please hit us up with specifics regarding your issue with muting, audio tracks, sample management and songmode. avoid what you described as "longwinded and drawn out" discussions and hook me up with some bug reports - bug reports, not beneficial tweaks, because in that regard unless the distinction between the two is blurred, i don't think os1 will see many more beneficial tweaks as it is now "yesterday's standard."

don't worry/write about me and my use. i would much rather hear your issue, specific and detailed.

---- more food for thought, no need respond this is just musing

as far as i see it i can't really be in the minority as far as workflow goes because all i do really is run through the functions, lil this lil that

here's a question to think about:

can it really be said that there is a majority workflow? if so, can anyone really know what that is? seems difficult to determine in a detailed way exactly how X amount of nerdy dudes use their machines from within the privacy of their homes knawmeen

if anything i'd say by sheer numbers, it appears that most people use their mpc (ANY mpc) in the following way: the "majority workflow" is (and this isn't in reference to anyone directly) the workflow of someone who has some experience but not too much--is still very much "on the grid" as far as TC goes--samples long block phrases--doesn't do much layering--sequences either in main mode or 16 grid edit--probably doesn't use LFOs, Aftertouch, or Qreal--doesn't use loop in TRIM--turns to 16 levels before qlink--records a different drum sound on different tracks--perhaps loads large pgms filled with 1 particular drum sound (kick pgm, hat pgm) to simulate preset surfing....

i would GUESS that this is the majority workflow, kind of a blur between using the mpc as a live-audio-triggered-by-midi kind of bizarro SPx0x...this is from how i've read people do things, from my own experience listening to music in the my music section, and the history of my own workflow

anyway back on subject, get me some bug reports !!

Can i just say that im gald to just have someone out there willing enough to put mad time and effort into making a machine (that the makers themselves wont do) better.

Ill always pay for JJ sht no matter if i need it or not.
Im just happy to not use the Akai OS :D

yeah i kinda like the jjos1 better, but the adsr function on os2 realy convinced me to buy it, becase the envelopes were really limitd on the os1..

and the new track mixer on os2 really i doan like compared to the old way...

but really , i been using logic since 2.0 in 1990, and back then i had a sp-12...since then i love to have mpc-stle machine next to my computer...cause makin beats with your hands on mpc simply has a feel and quickness you cyan beat..and i still usin logic everyday to put the mpc's analog outputs into ...

i dunno if you know this, friendo, but the old mixer is still there as well, new track mixer is simply additional
there was no "old way" cuz there wasn' a track mixer before this
