I just had this idea last night. Right now i don't know if it's a good or bad idea.
What if it was possible to reccord in one time a couple of track of a sequence. Imagine that you could affect just a pads or a few to a track so that when you are reccording a sequence, you can reccord for exemple snare kick and hi hat
at the same time and that they are automatically affected to different track.
I think it can increase work flow and give a more natural feeling. It would be like playing a real drum!
I think this is only interresting for drum or percussion track.
what you guys think about that?
Can you see other application?

XL got it. I would like to know what jj got to say about that? I dont know, some statement.. that it wont happen or.. he's workin on it. If I could choose only one feature to add, I would vote for that one. multi :D

what is the goal of having each part of the drum sequence on a different track?

I like that idea....and it would save a little time. Not sure how they would go about implementing this idea.

Also, I don't think the XL does this from memory....

I'd like if it was implemented so that you could access multiple programs on several different tracks at once and use the MPC as a kind of rompler

I don't see how it would make anything more natural or like a real drum though... I'm confused on that part

I don't really like the one-drum-per-track thing either though for on an MPC, that's just too much to work with (but is why a PAD MUTE function would be very nice)

conversely, don't you find it an inconvenience to have to move view to different tracks just to edit different drum parts? especially when you lose the side by side comparison of their timing placements?

maybe it's just playing style and genre style

when all we had was step edit, i had every drum on a different track too, cuz otherwise it was next to impossible to do deep step editing. even then though i had to play at least the kick/snare/hi hat all at the same time and delete out the kick/snare when i was recording the hi hat, otherwise it didn't feel right to just peck a single pad

i'd like the original poster's idea...that is, if you could still view/edit all recorded notes as if they all on 1 track. in this way, "Tracks" would become more like "groupings" which could be edited independently or all together...

hmmm someday i'll implement that into my own sequencing program if that ever exists...haha

yeah I definitely like to have lots of drums on the same track, the only thing it's good for to have them isolated is if you are going to be doing a lot of individual processing in a DAW later.

A pad mixer mode would be good for that because you could quickly get a multi-track recording of your drums, all from just one track, by muting certain pads and recording in stages.

Just working on the MPC though, having all those tracks is really annoying

That last thing you said though just made me think of how amazing it would be to have software for the PC that would recreate the OS2 functions and then import/export the settings and samples through the USB and MIDI in/out ports when you put the two into a sort of 'Sync' mode and would. The PC software could have features like a multi-track edit view like you mentioned and other expanded usability that could then be exported back to the MPC as if it were all done natively in the first place.

Pretty farfetched idea though

Back to the original topic of this post though --

The multi-track sequencing would make it possible for other features, like assigning midi channels to tracks for external controlling

(see that thread that just got started on multi-midi mode, and the one on multi-timbrel usage)

i do loads of individual processing in DAW, but the way i isolate them is just having them each go to a different out when i track out. tracking out would be a little easier if all were in their own track group, but not enough to make it worth it to lose the "closeness" of having all the drums right there together in MGE.

yes, though, incoming midi channel => track is an essential pending feature request. i wouldn't even use it (at first, i have plans for it later) but it's one of those things that all high powered midi editing platforms or samplers should be able to do...like keygroups, aftertouch...

i would love it---even just so that I could be playing/recording vdrums or mpc drums while someone else is recording keyboard, and someone else recording another synth, all through the mpc.midi multi-tracking...neccesary.

As far as the responses I've read on this topic so far; for an MPC I tend to agree with the opinions that, ON AN MPC, 'one drum per track' might not be the most efficient work flow for most users... Due to the display constraints, having the relative rhythmic relationships represented on ONE track lends itself to easier editing (at least if you benefit from some of the visual aspects of sequencing). On the other hand, I wouldn't personally ever record acoustic drums/instruments all on one track. That's a different ballgame... each drum will (often) require more flexibility, ie: levels during mixing, insert sends, eq, post-fader sends/effects, routing to individual tracks/subgroups/stems/etc. If you want to push audio for certain drums out on the individual outputs, that's why they're there. If there's the need to use different quantizing/T.C. values for individual sounds I believe you can already do that even with multiple samples sequenced within the same track(?). Processing-wise, we're only really generally working with (potentially) 2 independent sends, so even if we have every drum on different tracks there isn't any inboard-potential to benefit from more than 2 unique processing routines. I could ramble on, but one of the attractions to an MPC is that we can work with ~"studio-quality" samples~. The minor adjustments made from instrument to instrument likely shouldn't require the facilities that "one instrument per track" -=COULD=- afford us(?).

Personally; AUDIO-WISE, I tend to track each drum/element individually (per track), but as-so-far-as MIDI goes, there are already a lot of options to achieve what you want sonically, in the end...(?)

Anyways, WTF-do-I-know?!

:-p

I missed Dramatix04's post/concept when I decided to yap previously- As far as I understand HIS POST, I'd f-in love being able to potentially track a "MIDI-Band", during a live session, on individual tracks (...including extensive CC info), on my sweet-'ole MPC1K! I really could be completely wrong here, BUT I don't think this thing was -EVER- expected to function like that(?)!

Multiple MIDI tracks being recorded SIMULTANEOUSLY isn't an MPC feature implemented to date (I think?!).

I have definitely (on occasion) wished that I simply could produce something; as polished as that which I can ENTHUSIASTICALLY BEGIN on an MPC, run through my humble 8bus Mackie, then through a few pieces of UNIQUE/DESIRABLE outboard, and can utimately RE-RECORD within my DAW. Etc. I don't think that was ever the goal of our beloved MPC's(?)

:-)

I ~might~ look after my FEW tube/vintage pieces of gear better than my girlfriend but, like-it-or-not, computers are here to stay I think...

According to some posts from people around the board, it's been possible on some previous models
