In the main screen in OS1 there used to be a midi velocity setting.
You could adjust the midi velocity for each track between 0-100. I found this feature useful for getting a balanced sound becuase I use a lot of midi sounds.

Since moving to OS2 I cannot find this feature....does anyone know if is still a part of OS2 and where can I find it?

cheers

it's been replaced by the track mixer (mode pad 04)

nym, i notice in many of your solutions to things in a flexible situation, u choose to 'hard'fix them or suggest others do the same,
eg: 2nd eq in OS2 missing - u suggest 'hard' eq-ing the sample to get the same results, ....here (above) the dood's involved with the very flexible track velocity param, u suggest 'hard' setting the velocity of the midi data, i'm wandering wether u see any value keeping functions that are intended to retain a sense of flexiblity in the state of data.....i personally way prefer to have a rough setup that is 'perfect' when many values are set/tweaked to their optimum values - but can be nudged into variants of these values for continued searches for the other 'optimums' by simply adjusting these flexible parameters. it just seems a hard way to work - to set everything in stone at every decision point along the creative process.

dont get me wrong here. this isnt a criticism - just trying to gauge other users priorities where OS improvements (or losses) are concerned

Guess everyone has 'their' methods but it's still good to get different ideas.

For my money the new track mixer looks very very useful when using an external sound source.

Previously I was linking the q-links to Midi CC volume/pan/etc but with the new track mixer I can see all my settings on one screen. Magic!

Once again kudos to JJ and big thanks to anyone who bothers to help out (especially without making me feel like an idiot for not knowing in the first place).

interesting observation and discussion arebee:

in the case of the "hard EQ" replacement for filter 2, you're dead on in your assessment of my method. however, that never came through, but it does have a quality of some of my approaches, mainly with keeping multiple copies of pgms, samples, tracks...etc

a similar example of "hard fixing" is my method of programming chopped samples, the alt loop, NOTE ON, specifically determined DURATION (simulates HOLD, each note lasts til next note)....all of that is very hard fix, very little of the original pad performance is not "perfected" in mge. though this can be very fatiguing, the result is a simulated "realtime timestretch" or "rt pitch shift," as you can either change the tune or tempo and the timing and/or tune stays the same, respectively.

BUT i'm drawling. in this case, i'd argue that this isn't a "hard fix," it's a little different. "subtract" in SEQ edit is a nice function because it brings everything down collectively, maintaining its variance. say you have a bunch of tracks whose velocity is all over the place: subtract 20 vels, and it's still all over the place, just 20 vels softer.

such a usage is certainly not hard, as it may be changed back at any time. HOWEVER: in most cases when using the track velocity function, (MOST), it was just for a quick volume control. today, that operation is easiest performed in either track mixer view: MIXER (pad 4) or the textual track readout (window over TRACK). from there you can adjust your actual LEVEL---rather than VELoCITY, which, depending on the program/device you are controlling, may have a different effect at high/low velocities.

phew - lot of words, but do you see where i'm going? in THIS case, it's not really a "hard fix" as much as a "different fix." i do this a lot, as i use reason's nnxt a lot and sometimes their sample layers are arranged in a clunky way, so i duck my velocities in SEQ EDIT (formerly using track velocity) in order to bypass the tinny top layer in favor of a warmer, more intimate softer layer.

as far as "losses" go, track velocity was a "loss" but at the same time it was a slightly redundant function, in the light of the TRACK MIXER, because of WHOLE+LVL in GPE, and ESPECIALLY because of the "velocity" depth that defaults to 50-100 in AMP. this causes much lighter hits to sound much louder by default.

one last interesting point: lately i've been running midi through various MIDI vst and jesusonic effects before it hits Reason: stuff like velocity limiters, midi scale snappers, midi arpeggiators. THiS is a whole NEW approach that really excites me: especially when i then bring that midi back into the MPC for further editing. it's like adding dozens of options to "SEQ EDIT" in realtime, blows my mind every time i give it a whirl. a little new to me, still, but highly recommended: try these free plugs:

complex and interwoven, caffeinated answer but hopefully it was an interesting read

i LOVE using these. i use the ones built into Cubase. i would love to see this kind of thing either built into JJ OS (probably outside his area of expertise) or built into a little hardware box that you can take on the road with you without worrying about having a laptop on stage with you just sitting there processing midi notes. if anyone know about something like this existing let me know, but my googling hasn't turned up anything.

please please bring back the track velocity , or get rid of the "track/pgm" nonsense in the track mixer....been using that simple vel control for years to mix quickly.

now when i adjust the levels separatly in track mode, the effects get stuck on the whole track instead of just seperate pads..gotta copy the whole program and rename it to seperate out a hit for reverb individually

makes it much more time consuming now to just dial in a reverb on a hit somewhere where the program is playin a bunch of hits, without having to duplicate the whole program just to avoid having reverb on the whole program/track. to mix my levels seperatly now is a pain in the ass..

the difference between track/pgm in the mixer happens to be exactly what you're missing regarding fx, out, level

TRACK is for global track control (OUT, FX, mixer level)
PGM is for individual pad control (multiple OUTS, different FX, multiple mixer levels)

perhaps you just need to separate your sounds to different programs more? realize that you have multiple places to turn down sounds--per pad (drum), per sample (inst), and per mixer (drum and inst, as TRACK or PGM).

TRACK VELOCITY wasn't ever intended for use as a mixing, as it actually brings the VELOCITY down (velocity, NOT level) which will have a drastically different rresult depending on the type of pgm you're using (velocity->filter) or what external midi device you're using (velocity->tons of functions). that's why it still exists in SEQ EDIT.

LEVEL is only one function that is often assigned to velocity...but that doesn't mean that velocity=level.

thx for the link, Nym. lotta good stuff there. if i could get a little hardware box to run that stuff i would be in heaven. i'm really suprised no one has manufactured anything like that yet. (there are a couple dedicated VST-running boxes but they are overkill for running just MIDI stuff & way too expensive.)

Frankel's "jesusonic" is kinda like that, but only for js code
i'd love an ultra portable piece of hardware, but in the meantime i use Reaper on my laptop to "sample" midi from my mpc, edit it via all these effects, and then route it back to my mpc. that way i get all the stuff i did w/ these effects actually recorded back as midi i can then edit further on the mpc...!!

did you check out the "munger?" remap ANY midi function to ANY OTHER midi function on ANY OTHER CHANNEL, etc etc etc...

can you think of any problem that would exist if the V% on the main screen was put back?

I kind of miss it as well - it doesn't even necessarily have to be on the main screen

what if in the track mixer screen there was another tab that was a velocity mixer?
