time signatures like 1/16

huh? thats a retarded statement.. anyone doing hip hop is in 4/4, 8/8/ 2/2 whatever, the point is it is all the same! you tell me you know music theory... FINE, but you have no idea what you are talking about for production. 1/16 is a common quantization standard, not a time signature retard, and until you can realize that you are not a "master of all things music", because you can tell me that sandy nelson was playing in 15/16 with a mad swing and drops to boot, you aint ****.

Especially around here.

F#ck you. F#ck your high horse.

F#ck your mother and your prep school too.

We don't care. and on that tip.. why don't you drop us a line on where to listen to your crappy music you make, so we can discuss your shortcomings for awhile.

D1CK. :!:

You just proved to me that you have zero knowledge about time -- the essence of music (especially hip-hop)

There's no such time signature as 8/8... it's the exact same thing as 4/4, as is 2/2 (only it actually is used as cut-time)

And I know that by you saying "it's all the same" you didn't mean that 8/8, 4/4, and 2/2 were all the same. Just made a fool of yourself.

And I know very well that 1/16 is probably the most popular quantization standard... moot point.

One last thing -- I definitely don't go to a prep school. More like one of the 3 worst and dangerous schools in Baltimore, MD which is known for having the highest murder rate in the country. Ever seen The Wire? Ever seen the schools in The Wire? That's what I live.

Some people just don't understand that the thing that makes a hip hop producer or beatmaker so FLY is that they don't know all of that sh#$ but can still make that heat . There is only two things you must have

a good ear
a good FEEL for the music.

At the end of the day does it really matter? You guys are p*ssing about this but the listener is the judge of good music. If its good and people like it who gives a f*ck about all the specifics.

Now my OPINION is that talent is more important. Why well think about it...What came first? The raw ability to make music or the technical aspect of how to format it? But thats my 2 pennies...yall could beef about this all day but I dont care if you have degrees, years of experience and can play 10 instruments, If your music is wak then your not much of a musician at all...

Nah, not quite. Hip-hop is easily my favorite genre... favorite to produce, -- know theory like no one else on this board, I could run circles on you; granted this doesn't make me a good hip-hop producer, but it certainly earns me far more respect than sampling will get you. See, being an actually musician is a cop-out for me. I can sample 20 seconds of a song, chop it up, and rearrange it an not feel guilty because I actually know the chords being played -- I know how to count the rhythms, I know that time signatures like 1/16 don't really exist outside of an MPC, I know that four beats in 4/4 isn't called a bar, it's called a measure. But no one here wants to hear any of that.

I guess you can apply the same idea to the knowledge of equipment in production -- %99.9 of the time, the dudes with crazy rack gear, every drum machine and all that... their beats whack as ****. But anyways -- sampling doesn't require musical knowledge, just an ear.

But to be a good musician you have to have a good ear ,THEN you get musical knowledge , but the ear is the main ingredient , where you take it from there depends on exacltly what you do. There are different degrees of knowledge and different methods of applying your knowledge . There's also different ways of learning. I heard a song where this jazz cat was doing a cover of "Electric Relaxation "

Alistar, in case you didn't notice... you represent EXACTLY the type of people I go against in this thread. So, go **** yourself son and leave us be. Us the ignorant and less trained people...

Who gives a **** about your musical knowledge? This is hiphop we're talking about. And I bet my 2kxl that at least half the people in this board can clown your beats dead easy. And that includes me also.

And that's exactly the point of this discussion: in this music genre which we call Hip Hop, theoretical skills don't count. Only perception and taste. And it has been proven so many times that it's plain stupid to try and convince people that musicians can make better hip hop than getto people living side by side with their MPC's. Every single time I've heard a hip hop attempt by a person outside our world, it was the cheesiest thing I've ever listened to my life. And you know the reason? Simply, it was made by the book. And every little bit of *flavor* and *freshness* was slaughtered of course...

And all the above go exactly the same way around: every time I saw a dumbass with an mpc trying to make jazzy joints, it was so awful that I couldn't even listen up to the main part.

"The main part" -- you mean the chorus? Yeah, I'm sure your beats would trash mine. I mean at least learn the basics.

If Mingus were still alive and you walked up to him and said "let me take a 24 bar solo" -- he would smack the **** outta you.

Alistar

"Fine Jazz is when a tenorman lifts his foot in the air.Great jazz is when he leaves a piercing note for 32 bars and collapses on his hands and knees."

Charles Mingus

Seen as you know so much about music theory, I was wondering if you could explain the theory on how a man can smack the shit out of himself, for us dummies over here on the mpc forum...I should have read the manual but im confused.

Thanks.

Really been trying to stay outta this waste of time, but SOME OF US ACTUALLY ATTENDED COLLEGE AND HAVE STUDIED MUSIC THEORY AT LENGTH. To the tune of YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. Have been tested on said knowledge. Have had to apply said knowledge and PROVE we know wtf we are talking about... and as a result now have a degree and years of industry experience to back it.

So, all this talk of "its hip-hop so who needs it", and "I know more than anyone here", and all that noise..... Drano is a tasty beverage, have some.

Some ignorant ass statements have been made in this thread, and truthfully, GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC - PERIOD. A listener does not care what you do or do not know, whether or not you stumbled onto something nice or have a natural talent. If they like it, they like it and if they don't then they don't.

True, and I'm glad you said that because I'm really sick and tired of people saying shit like "it's hip-hop so I don't need to learn music, I can just do what sounds good" -- that's true but only to a certain extent. You can only go so far just by ear. Any real musician will tell you that.

Regardless... people in hip-hop act like they don't need to learn any bit of it. Not good.
