I bought a 2500 a couple monthes ago, I had a 2000 before and I'm dign the new features. I want to play a sample on the (tune)16 levels without effecting the tempo. I've tried the manuel and searchin and I'm still unclear? Dude on youtube does it with the patched phrase function and it seems that if the original sample's tempo isnt dead on it doesnt work? Anyhow still confused about the whole thing? Any help would be great. Thanx in advance.

In all honesty, I don't mess around with patched phrase at all.

I know the video you are talking about. If I remember correctly the dude just took a loop that had a steady tempo and he set up slice points that were equidistant from each other.

I've tried it out in the past with samples that weren't dead on and I do find it difficult to impossible to get it right. I think alot of it has to do with tweaking the slice/marker points correctly so they are in the right spots.

My understanding of patched phrase is that it is similar to warping samples in software. So you have to set warp markers and each little slice gets adjusted to the desired tempo (according to the algorithm that the MPC is using to adjust the little pieces).

So having the warp markers in the right spots (say on every quarter note of a 1 bar loop) and not necessarily equidistant (especially when you are dealing with a sample with tempo changes) will yield a better result. Not necessarily a result that sounds exactly like the original sample but something that will be able to lock to the tempo of your project correctly.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here please, since I'm actually also kind of confused as to how patched phrase works. (Sorry if my explanation sounded kind of confusing)

Yeah you need to set the markers in the right place (i find this way easier in the JJOS)
Its not quite like the ableton live warp cause that timestreches in realtime, its more like a reason rex file, individual slices triggered at different times.
The release feature on the mpc time stretches the individual slices destructively so even when played at the original tempo it will have that time stretched character to the sound. Ableton will only souind timestretched when you move away from the original tempo.

a better thing to do than patched phrase is just chop the sample up and reprogram it, that way you don't lose control of the parameters of individual pieces

yeah, but that dude has NOOO idea how much confusion he's caused people
that video is NOT realtime timestretch, there's no timestretching whatsoever going on in it

otherwise it's a good video but maaan...the amount of times people see it and think they're seeing something else...

^^^ Exactly. I saw that video when I first got my MPC. I was completely confused because he wasn't time-stretching the sample on 16-levels. It was more like real-time pitch shifting.

But I still think he has a pretty decent dvd for beginners on the 2500 and if you're too lazy to read the manual.
