thanks man. they sound very dated to me now, those were made on mpc1000 os 1.07 and 2.01, which only had step edit and couldn't apply a qlink over the entire track. those days are long gone, next album sounds like it has a lot more control.

i agree with removing CLICK from the main page, but in it's place i would want to see BOTH track level and track velocity. you could just move the cursor from one field to the other and the os would remember your choice so when you hit the f2 key the next time the field you last selected would be highlighted & ready to be tweaked with the data wheel.

actually, the more i think about this, it might be cool to have that f2 tab have a user selectable parameter in it. it could be a general purpose "quick access" tab in which you could select 1 parameter from a list of parameters that you want to have at hand in the main screen. hit f2 & whatever param you selected will pop up & be ready to tweak with the data wheel.

i guess we could take a vote or something on what the top 10 or 20 parameters we want to have be possible choices in the tab?

just brainstorming...

I don't agree with removing the click function from the front page, though I wouldn't have a problem with some menu sharing. For me the click falls into the category of stuff you think you'll never need until the moment when you're mighty glad it's straight to hand. I was doing a couple of tracks with the mpc live with a generally acoustic band on Sunday in Birmingham (UK) - if there's anyone on here who's been to the fabulous Sunflower Lounge - and I needed to make an urgent adjustment during the soundcheck ... well, ok, some taps on the hi hat in an intro. But the click was right where I needed it to be so that I could get the job done a.s.a.p. I appreciate that routing of velocities and midi ccs is really good shizzle'n'all, but I personally would sooner the click stayed exactly where it is!

there's still plenty of tabs on the SHIFT main screen right?

well, its been a few days, a few beats later... i tried adapting my workflow to adjusting the pad level individually, but you gotta rememeber which pad has what sound or you gotta search it out, which takes time..

i started going back to one program, one track, to get around the time consuming grrrrr of searching out pads to get levels after the performances were done...so, its like the jjos2 makes the mpc more modelled after what i do in a DAW: individual , pre-though out tracks separated from the start.

what i liked about my all old mpcs, was that i can make my beats real quick and get a real intuitive feeiing out faster than building a beat "mentally" on the computer.. with the old system , i could just bang out my performances on different tracks, set up velocities on them to balance the relative levels . after , i transfer the analog outputs into my DAW, and finish there.

what i really like about the jjos2 is the flexibility of the 'trk' versus 'pgm' , and the ADSR is finally where it should be for ANY sampler in 2008..the pattern mode is wicked beyond belief for comin up with some bugged out stuff, and being able to get almost anywhere from the main screen is awesome..
however, losing the velocity control on the MPC has forced me to completely change my workflow, to have access to all those nice OS2 things.

for makin' beats quick, i gotta go back to 4.99 for the time being, it's a big improvement over akai's OS, and while 4.99 lacks the whole slew of nice things that OS2 has brought forward, it contains that ONE original, time-proven feature from akai's original os that i use to work all the time on every single beat, which i cant do without , and which jj doesn't want in the os anymore. .. ;(

anyways the conversation and suggestions have been wonderful-big up to everybody in the place!

i don't think TRACK VELOCITY was an akai feature, jm if i remember right it was added in jjos1

now help me understand something because this confuses me

i tried adapting my workflow to adjusting the pad level individually, bt you gotta rememebr which pad has what sound or you gotta search it out, which takes time..

why do you have to "search or remember?" enter GPE or SinglePE, hit the pad, no searching involved. unless i misunderstand you?

from what i read, it sounds like you never ever want to leave MAIN SCREEN, like EVER, not even to use Program mode...why is this?

By jackymurda Wed Apr 09, 2008 3:19 pm
have to admit that i guess i am pretty lazy about a lot of things in life, and really enjoy chillin in the main screen its true..

about the Vel there.., i seem to remember it there since my old 2000...but hey, maybe my memory is bad from all the spliff, if so, my apologies..

""why do you have to "search or remember?" enter GPE or SinglePE, hit the pad, no searching involved. unless i misunderstand you? ""

well, if you wanna turn down a particular sound in a pgm, you gotta know what pad its on first...

i got a question about the GPE and SPE. i only know how to get to MODE PAD7 . ...is that gpe or spe?? before it was on pad 11 the gpe...and pad 7 the regular prog edit..

ok, how about this for that LEVEL thing, in the CLICK's place in main screen: the 'level' control would adjust a whole track for inst pgms, but adjusts only that tracks performed pad's levels in the case of drum pgms. like only adjusting levels of whats played on that track..so far it seems the best way to get at the level is WINDOW over the Pad Number Field..it just sems silly to me to waste all that space on the track mixer with an unusable "pgm" field....

velo on main screen could be in the 2000, i am not as familiar with that. i was speakin more about the 1000 original os. but like you, my memory is swiss cheese...or smoked gouda, as it may be...haha

well, if you wanna turn down a particular sound in a pgm, you gotta know what pad its on first...

hahah this is all in good fun, but how spliffed out do you GET to where you don't remember which sound is on which pad? joking aside this is more a question of workflow. are you loading massive banks of sounds up and using that like a kind of "preview" mode? ie, a pgm full of hi hats where you tap different ones until you find one you like?

i got a question about the GPE and SPE. i only know how to get to MODE PAD7 . ...is that gpe or spe?? before it was on pad 11 the gpe...and pad 7 the regular prog edit..

that one is GPE, global padparam edit. SPE (single padparam edit) is accessed either by hitting WINDOW above the pad number/sample name in MAIN screen or by hitting window in most places in GPE (not all though. try hitting window above TUNE or LEvEL etc

Main screen velocity is there in the 2000 and was introduced to the 1000 about akai 2.0 or 2.1.
I held off from getting a 1000 until some of the features that came with akai version 2 and that was a little one that i was grateful for at the time, cause i was used to using it on the 2000.

Regarding track volume: i find it weird if you go into the pad mixer mode and adjust the level of one pad that it adjust the volume of the whole program. Its ok once you know that it does it, but can be a bit confusing at first, especially when the graphics show the level of only one pad changing, and you have no indication when your in old mixer mode that your global settings are overidden with the track mixer.

I just checked it: the Track Mixer just combines the following settings and applies them to all pads:

- Out Level
- Pan Level
- Output Source
- FX Settings
- Send Level

>> Well, actually it doesn't change ALL of the pgm settings, it just applies each of these parameters to ALL pads of a program. So you can't have individual settings for single pads like in the pgm mixer for these particular settings. And that's where the problems start. Because if you want to quickly change the output level of a track via track mixer, you have to disable the pgm mixer and all individual settings of the above mentioned parameters are overridden, as you mentioned. And this is by far not what velocity did in JJ 1 or AKAI OS!

So therefore, TRACK MIXER is just a substitute - and not even a good one to replace the velocity/ level control (or whatever you want to call it) for the MAIN screen! I don't really understand, why JJ handled it this way, if you think about how you'd route this in reason or whatever: combine all pads, run them through a trackmixer, which only handles the Volume, leaving individual settings untouched, nahmean?!

I also think that this thread is heading nowhere, because I doubt that there's going to be a change made in terms of changing the F-Button-Functionalities. But I could imagine, that a little change in the way the track mixer is constructed and working could do the trick!

PEACE

nah. i imagine that's an easy fix for JJ to do. he's done it before with something in the TRIM window if i remember correctly.

i still think a 'quick access' tab would do the trick. give us a list of 10 or so common parameters that we could choose from to assign to the f2 key. those that want LEVEL can put LEVEL, those that want TRIM can put TRIM, etc. hit F2 and it pops up, ready to edit with the data wheel.

But i would love to be able to set the whole level for pgm
i rarly use instr tacks
