Making digital music is a whole other way of making music. I think it's hard to compare. For a sampled based beat u don't have to read notes and stuff like that (of course understand measures and counting), but you make whatever you want, just because it sounds good. And that's the power of it I guess. And also the negative side of it, because making music is also accesable for people who don't understand music.

But hiphop producers do know music, and understand it, only in a different kind of way. A guitar player reads notes and practice to reproduce that note on the guitar. I hear a vibe, and I use my MPC (my instrument) to reproduce it in a other kind of arrangement. I can't explain what's a correct melody, but I do know, I do feel when a loop is musical correct.I just feel it. Allright, someone played those samples with an instrument. But for the guitar player, someone wrote down that note as well.

And maybe hiphop producers know even more about music then musicians who live by the theoratic rules. Their expressions are based on knowledge someone wrote down how it should be. Hiphop producers don't give a fock bout that. We just make music how we want it to sound, and just because it feels good. And that's music to me. A vibe or a feeling.

ive noticed that usually the ones who have slanted opinions on sampling, hiphop, music thoery, real musicians, etc. are the ones you could never convince otherwise..........there in lies the problem; its not that they are just mistaken, but they truely dont understand any way of thinking other than thier own.

its ironic how someone can call themselves a musician (or say they know what a real musician is) and be so close minded, its the exact oposite of what true muscianship is about?!

Hiphop culture has open way to the new musician of the future, where they don't have to know about music theory, i think thats why it's hated on so much by the real musician, shoot i hate on it too, cause i don't see the musicianship in music anymore.

if you got the talent to learn music then do and use it, if your a musician and you know all the instruments TEACH spread the knowlegde or your craft or it will be lost.

i don't know sh!t about MT but i will learn how i can when i can, even if i have to do it myself,
i'm a sample based artist only, but i have many instrument's that i have picked up along the way,and i have taught myself to play ,sure i can't play with the best of them, but i'm trying to learn so I DON't forget where the real music came from and my kids know what real music is and what/where it comes from INSTRUMENTS, my kids took music class in scholl they know how to read notes thats one step better then me,now i just got to teach my youngest thats more into what im in to that he can learn to play the drums and be better then i ever was, and hopfully he will be a real musician, cause the lord knows we need more of them they are not to many left of our greats theyre gettin older and passin away.

say what you will that i don't know about music, but i can tell you this i'm way rooted and i may know more about music then some of the musician out today.

i'm out

peace

How about this idea: if people keep up the mentality that sample-based music is 100% legit and it replaces actual instruments, then what the **** is gonna happen 50 years down the line? People are only gonna know how to press play on a CD, then record, loop, "arrange".

Don't get me wrong, I love sampling -- all my beats are sampled, but I supplement by knowing HOW to play an instrument. I'm not saying you need to know theory or how to read music. Just think about it.

have guitars or synths or any other instrument "replaced" any other actual instrument?!?!? instruments and digital sampling equipment dont have to be mutually exclusive, they can pretty much coexist in the same realm... it is up to the "musician" to choose his weaponry... just because a guitar player chooses not to learn the piano, does that make him less of a "musician"?!?!

lets just face facts, some people would give a schit less about music if it werent for hiphop... and some people could give a schit less about hiphop if it werent for the rap music aspect of it... :D

Hmmmm I dont know, I think it all comes down if you appreciate the music or not. People might not agree that a certain people aren't as talented as instrumental players. But it all comes down if you have the knowledge behind the music, and the patience to actually listen to the good stuff that is out there floating around...

kebzer wrote:Here's the thing, I usually hang out with people who continiously quote that thing: hip hop producers don't know anything at all about music, all they do is create a 4 bar loop out of someone else's music and call that music and song compiling. Hmmm, well, from one point view they are right. At least comparing that to rock bands who bust their arses to compile a whole 4 min song out of nothing.

But...Let's take things the opposite way. Hip hop producers make their music out of everything else. Which basically means that the more you listen to different genres, the more you can take out for your beats, right? A lot of us inside here have in their collections records from artists that 99,9% out there doesn't even know they ever existed, let aside to have heard their music. Which in turn means that a vast proportion of us actually know way more about music than anyone else in the music making world.

Also, a lot of artists from different genres have been ressurected or finally been discovered through rap songs. So, we' ve added more to this world than just a 4 bar loop.

But still, people regard us as toy mysicians. Isn't that ironic?

Co-Sign this shizz...
I get this all the time... Im new to the Akai MPC, Im getting one this week, bought it online...
But anyways I DJ also and I like to scratch and loop some of the weirdiest shiz out there.
I got some crazy records that i cant wait to sample with my MPC.

A true musician just has to know wat good music is...

Why'd this thread have to be brought back. Can we just block this or move it to a more appropriate section?
