With respects to JJ, i am sure most of you are aware that the chosen OS for users who post on this thread is unanimously OS 2 (well, for the most part)

I 100% completely support the JJ movement and i myself wil upgrade to OS 2 in the not too distant future, i give my props to JJ for OS 2, BUT... me being an avid user of OS 1 i can't help but feel the original OS 1 project is being slept on, as you all know, we were promised a completion date of march 2008, its now half way through april and we still have no indication of OS 1 going to the completed V5.

don't missconstrue my comments, i'm a patient man and I in no way want to badger JJ or put them uder pressure for completing OS1, but does anybody else share my views?
i was wondering, because the subject matter of this thread has been circulating around OS 2 for the last number of months, including the fact that JJ seems to be updating OS 2 alot more frequently than OS 1. i am also aware of the price increase of OS 2 starting on april 15th, all this has lead me to believe that JJ is taking a back seat from OS 1 and focusing primarily on OS 2.

is there anybody on here would like to see OS 1 completed?

i would like to hear from other people, particularly OS 1 users. again i am not doubting JJ's work.

peace.

i feel the same way.. i think if we had a complete version of os1 more ppl would be willing to buy os2.,, just think would u buy grand theft auto 4 if gta 3 was sold to u incomplete.

you guys know that there is a size limitation to os1 right?
the last few kilobytes of space thats left are for minor bug fixes.
i'd rather JJ leave this open, compared to having him say os1 is completed and then NEVER do the occasional bug fix when something creeps up monthes from now.

just outta curiosity what would exactly make os1 "complete" for you guys?

the only bug that drives me crazy is that even though i save entire project memory to seperate folders when i do my beats, sometimes when i reload those project files the samples don't load and i have to manually load the same directory too.

and i love os1 to death, so i agree with your original point about the threads here revolving around os2.
everyone's excited and happy about os2 so thats all anyone is ever gonna talk about.
its understandable cause os2 has some crazy features. i'm happy for everybody else's excitement, but personally for my workflow any time i tried os2 i straight up hated it. it hurts me to say that cause i was really excited when it came out, but i've never enjoyed using it the way i love using os1 when making a beat.

Complete means auto beat making, auto this, easy that.... Come on. The shit is done and its usable. By no means is OS 1 incomplete.

You hit the nail on the head there, its the fact that bugs still exist.

like everybody else who has bought OS 1 or 2, we have paid money for an OS that is meant to do what the akai OS coudn't do, and for that i think it is only fair that we get a solid product. i'm not hating on JJ or anything, but like i said in my origianl post, there was a completion date for march, butall i ahve seen in the last few months are lots of OS2 bug fixes and petty OS1 updates.
i can be patient, i would just like piece of mind that the OS 1 project is still heading somewhere, i would hate to think of JJ letting it lie to focus on just OS2.

i'm curious about how many people who claim bug actually take the time to right it out per instructions, step by step, and report it. if you are not someone who has reported a REPRODUCIbLE BUG in understandable trans-english then you have zero legitimacy in complaint.

as you all know, we were promised a completion date of march 2008, its now half way through april and we still have no indication of OS 1 going to the completed V5.

os2 1.0 was promised in march. i never read anything regarding os1. you also use the word "completion." this is not a word that should be used when discussing code. a program is only "complete" when the programmer literally says "no more changes, ever"

punchdrunk, to say you "hated the workflow" of os2 also quite literally means that you hate the workflow of os1. when i started using os2 in December it was nothing more jarring than switching brands of toothpaste. even useless old OPM has a similar quick access "SPE." for you to have such a self described violent reaction is evidence to me at least that you've simply not used 2 past it's new car smell. and that goes for everyone, with all due respect.

like i said, if you find a bug, for christ's sake don't cry about it and wait for someone else to report it
yall are beta testers, behave like one
or go find a music software that has no bugs - oh wait...

with all due respect, people use their mpcs in different ways, just because you've been plugging OS2 since it first dropped does not mean evrybody else has to get it.

OS1 was created to substitue the akai OS, that why most of us got it, i think its a fair question to ask when its going to be bug free, after all we fukin paid for it.

also, i have in no way questioned the integrity of OS2, and neither did punchdrunk for that matter, it was a simple expression of dislike. i myself am very thankful for OS 1 to say the least.

i bet alot of people on here who have OS2 don't use half of the shyt it can do, it would have made no difference had they just stuck with OS 1, they are merely using it because the mpc-forum society says they have to or they wanna feel good about themselves by giving JJ another couple of bucks.
By dtaa pla muk Sat Apr 12, 2008 4:04 pm
way to address the points aimed at you there, holmes.
like i said, you ONLY have a "right to ask when it's gonna be bug free" when you've put in YOUR OWN WORK. if not, you have ZERO claim to complaint, and risk being laughed out of the arena.
there is a children's story about a chicken who wants to make bread
at every stage of baking she asks for help from the other animals
each time, they're all busy, except when it's time to eat the bread
call me aesop.

regarding usage:

sh!t, 99.9% of all mpcs barely get their meniscus broken in terms of actual usage, regardless of os
i know firsthand that most are at less than half capacity on os1, let alone 2.
you've got most people using their mpcs like spX0X's, needing nothing more than recording notes blind onto a blank sequencer

this is not even a point of contention, because there's nothing that's gonna change that besides personal volition on every single mpc user's part.

i have os1 and had it since it first dropped... not really planning on os2 cuz os1 does everything i need it to do..its cool to have extra features and what not, but for what if you dont and wont use em..

i too wish there was a date set for os1 to be finished, just for satisfaction of knowing my mp is up to date and so i dont have to keep checking on the newest version.. other than that it doesnt effect my workflow so im really happy...

i really got it cuz its way easier to chop using sliders instead of the spin wheel or entering numbers..

i think when alls said n done.. ppl that paid for os1 jus look at it like any other product...
they paid so they want all the benifits... but really.. for the price, hasn't it been worth the money so far??

you got to look at this from JJ's perspective os1 IS os2!

what i mean is, OS 2 really isn't meant to be an alternative to OS 1, or even a different OS, OS 2 is what OS 1 would be without the 900kb code limit.

when JJ found out the hack to get him a bunch of new code space, it was like winning the lottery. now all the stuff he probably always wanted to do (if he only had the codespace) he could finally do it. OS 2 isn't re-written from the ground up, it's OS 1 with a bunch of new features added & more to come.

so to him, OS 2 is just an extension of what he was doing all along with OS 1. it's what he's focused on. OS 1 is in the past. that's not so hard to understand. if you won the lotto & bought a mansion, would you want to go back & live in the tiny studio apartment you were in before? hell no.

sure, OS 1 will still get bug fixes. but there is SO little room for them it's got to be really hard to do. he will have to start pulling features out to make room for the fixes (remember those days?). he probably gets a headache every time he goes back to the OS 1 code & tries to figure out how to cram the fixes in.

Nym wrote:punchdrunk, to say you "hated the workflow" of os2 also quite literally means that you hate the workflow of os1.

honestly you're usually on point with most things i've seen you post over the years, but that was really the most retarded thing i've seen from you. i understand the logic that os2 was built up off of os1, but the workflow is different.

i was gonna do a breakdown of what personally bothers me between the two os's, but i'm lazy and its too nice a day to bothered with typing all that so instead here's the quick general rundown from the JJ page...

-------------------------------
The function which exists in OS1 and does not exist in OS2.
1. Sample layer 4
2. AMP Velocity =>Attack
3. AMP Velocity =>START
4. PITCH Velocity =>Pitch
5. FILTER2
6. Filter Time
7. Filter Amount
8. Filter Velocity =>Time
9. Filter Velocity =>Amount
10. Filter Velocity =>Frequncy
---------------------------------

...and yes i know there are workarounds, but THOSE WORKAROUNDS THEMSELVES MAKE A DIFFERENT WORKFLOW. that aspect can't be argued. you can say the os's are similar to a degree, but there is a still a different workflow too it so please don't feed me that os 1 and os 2 are literally the same workflow stuff.

like i said before i'm glad everyone else loves os2. i'm happy for you, and this thread is making me come off really anti os2 when i'm not. i just honestly don't enjoy using it personally.

Nym wrote:for you to have such a self described violent reaction is evidence to me at least that you've simply not used 2 past it's new car smell.

i've used it a bunch of times, always trying to give it another chance. whether i got past that new car smell i don't know. i do know anytime i used it i didn't really enjoy it. and that bums me out more than you can understand. i was ready to send my money into JJ back in november or december when the first beta version dropped. but when i actually installed it and used it my reaction was "....meh." then i tried it again....and again.....i just never got into it.

and i just used it again right now after reading you new car smell comment and still the same thing.
"...meh."

believe me i'd rather love os2 cause any new JJ developments and features are gonna only appear for os2.
but my honest reaction everytime is still always .... :?

peace.

alright man, yes, i've read the list, it's a clear enough example of the differences, though it is outdated.
similarly a different combinations of buttons to achieve the same result in an often faster way can be called different workflow.

but whatever. i don't believe it should present anyone such a problem. that's not a criticism, just a my believe after putting in a considerable investment of time and energy into both sides of the creek--more so into OS1 than OS2!!

clearly, it does present a problem to some. i'm sorry, especially sorry because it genuinely looks like you've made your honest effort.

but both of us can agree that getting YOU to change is not my problem, not my business.

but it's far too soon for an indignant "what about us" mentality from those who are on os1
which is still being bugfixed (when bugs are actually reported in a reproducable, confirmable fashion), but which will not have any additional features added to it. especially with a low number of actual reported os1 bugs

and, especially when it comes at the cost of naysaying a viable, stable os2 at a time of a weak American dollar. especially when some hack-jackass may or may not be attempting to pull FURTHER business from jjos by cracking os's. these are dangerous times for a smalltime private programmer who we have all taken for granted.

this is when it does become my business--self interest!! the day will one day come when ALL os is called quits, end of story. we may be incredibly lucky and see the OS open sourced. maybe.

or, it may be the end altogether. if that is the case, from a purely selfish standpoint i'd rather see os2 as far ahead as it can possibly be. can you expect anything else from me at this point? i have every intention of seeing this thing through the next decade and watching it stand up to developing technology.

hah this is where my retardation stems from

Different strokes for different folks. You've got cats like Nym and others who appear to be super technical with the features and their production techniques which is great. You also have cats such as myself who just do what sounds good and will go the extra mile to build upon that idea and perfect it without an extreme amount of processing which is also good. There's still some things on the os1 that I have never used or don't know how to use and don't plan on using but I still get my desired results.
At the end of the day its about what sounds right?
I feel that the os2 caters to a particular type of producer as does os1.

Somebody can use every single feature in the os2 and still make some bullsh!t...
When JJ fixes my midi issue Im good! I know they are hard at work on the new os but even they said themselves that people aren't really buying the os2. I feel that jj shouldn't spread themselves thin and just focus on finishing up the os1. They now have 2 open cans of worms. You don't release the Playstation2 & Playstation3 together or in close proximity.

word. different workflow was all i was saying. and what might be a faster way for you, might be slow as hell for me. at the end of the day i think we all try to use the most comfortable enjoyable way to work and accomplish what we need to. and that differs for everyone.

i mean (this is a bit off topic example) buti know you love grid edit and its probalbly sped up your workflow immensely, while i've found that for myself i work way faster when i don't use it. neither way is neccessarily better for %100 of the people. different workflow.

yep i've made an effort. i've sat around and messed with lots of the features and was able to work and accomplish what i needed to, but overall its just a comfort/annoyance thing. but i will say that there have been some times where i've made some crazy sounding stuff just messing with the ADSR and filter. some of the tones and sounds i've gotten out of os2 is crazy. i'll still probalbly give it another chance in a month or so...

Nym wrote:but both of us can agree that getting YOU to change is not my problem, not my business.

%100.
never was, never should be, and nor do i want it to be.
i think we both would have been better off if we had spent the time wasted on this thread making beats instead!

Nym wrote:but it's far too soon for an indignant "what about us" mentality from those who are on os1

i pretty much agree with everything you said from that point and on.

people feeling that jj owes them something need to calm the f*ck down and realize how lucky there are for what they got for that initial $30 they spent. and also should feel lucky whenever there are any os1 updates at all at this point.

....ohh and f*ck that scumbag trying to sell JJ passcodes.
